It is my experience that girls use that term too lightly. Don't misunderstand, it is not an issue to be taken lightly at all. But many of the girls that say they were and did not confess were pressured and said ok even though they really didn't want to but could have walked away. They could and did not. And for the women who truly were, it is because they feel so violated and vulnerable that they'd rather not tell people. It makes them feel as if people will think they can't take care of themselves and they are weak. They don't realize that by saying something, they might be able to stop that guy from do it to another girl.

Well they don't for many reasons. They feel ashamed and dirty and just want to forget it ever happened so they denie it. Another thing is that they fear that people won't believe them and will look at them like they deserved it or that they want to get something out of it like attention, or revenge. They think this because of all the dumb girls that pull those scams and make the other that really have it happen look bad. They might also be affraid of what the guy will do to them if they tell. Things like that are hard to understand if you've never been thur it.

As has been pointed out that a woman who is raped often feels that it is her fault, feels as if she could have prevented it had she been more cautious, alert, aware, said the right things, not have allowed herself to be in an environment that encouraged the rape.....which is not true. Rape is an act of violence, of control, not one that focuses on sexual acts even though they are involved. It is an act of cowardice that often is reflected back to the woman as the one responsible.
It continues to be a stigma and yes like any other issue that gets clouded and misunderstood [putting that lightly although meant intensely], due to the individuals who use the term, who make allegations that are false, vengeful or done out of embarassment.
i understand personally and it can affect you at times when you least expect, even years after.

from a public stand point there are a lot of stigmas attached to rape. some people even go as far as to blame the victim, and others simply don't believe the person. so some women just rather not go through the added drama. on the other hand rape can be very devastating. it's almost like if don't admit it you can pretend that it didn't happen. other reasons... they may know the person, they may even feel guilty about their behavior that led up to the rape... etc...

Most women feel ashamed. It is a very traumatic experience, and something you don't want others to know about. You don't want other people's pitty or judgement. Some women feel at fault for it, they think that people will assume they had control or possibly think that they are making it up. Others may not say anything because they were threatened their life if they told.

There is a stigmitism attached to it, many people feel responsible for what was done to them even though it was out of there control. If only i did this, if only i wore this, if only i screamed louder, if i made a left turn instead of a right - unless you are a woman who was in this situation you will never be able to understand the doubt and fear it leaves you with.

it would probably be really, embarrassing and humiliating if you were to admit that you were raped. i guess you would also be a bit traumatized after the event, and wouldnt have even thought of telling anyone. by the time the person got over the shock, i bet they would think it is too late to tell anyone, so they dont.

I feel that some women are ashamed about it and feel that it is there fault and dont want to think about it, whereas some feel that they should be punished or they need to tell someone they trust and then get given some advice.

When someone is raped, its really hard for anyone to admit it. A lot of pain and emotions cloud the picture
