First of all find out how spelling will effect the grade. I can't believe that spelling is going to be a significant factor which will determine your ability to enter this field. Perhaps other police officers that have taken the exam (any local police officer would be more than happy to answer and may have taken the exact same exam),and can give you some insight. Find out if there are essays questions, multiple choice, or fill in the blanks. Hope this helps.

There are many test taking guides available at book stores. Just do a search at Amazon under books and type in police officer test taking guide or law enforcement test taking guide and it will give you good books that have sample tests.
In california, visit post.ca.gov, click under Selection and Recruitment on the left of the website and then click on the link: Peace Officer Selection Tests
Then click on Applicant Preparation Guide. This will lead you to a 32-page sample test you can print out and then grade yourself.
Post is the state agency that administers all tests for police officers in California, no matter what department.
I would imagine the test is similar to entry level tests given in other states. Most departments don't expect applicants to have prior law enforcement experience therefore these tests are usually based on 12th grade english grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension. Some also include an essay portion.
If all else fails, take a refresher writing or reading course in a community college. Good luck.

The bulk of the written exam is filling in dots, you don't need to spell to pass.
As far as the job itself, you will have lots of help. If you need to file a written report, you can use a computer program with a spell checker. In most departments, you do not type your own reports, you dictate them on tape and a transcriptionist types for you.
The most valuable element in a police officer is not spelling, it is being able to apply common sense. You show good judgement there, and they will overlook minor things.
I would suggest a keyboarding class, to make your typing more efficient. That way the computer catches your errors!
Good luck.

that's a hazard. Getting police officer jobs is transforming into further and extra aggressive. whilst police departments are hiring, they many times have many qualified applicants for a comparatively small style of openings. Departments many times have the luxurious of being waiting to be very selective approximately who they hire. Any purple flags can harm your probabilities of having employed by ability of a few departments. some departments probably does no longer hire you, yet some could in case you have been an otherwise stable candidate.

Most paperwork these days is done on a computer where there is a spell checker
However, taking statments and other paperwork ( Forms and pocket notebook entry's) would still need to be written
Practice your spelling and go for it, if your spelling is that bad you will not pass the PIRT ( Police initial recruitment tests)

You are not a brilliant typist either. There are typing courses for that, but for spelling my advice would be to improve on your spelling, look up law enforcement related words, while you are studying and writing them correctly in a small notebook to keep close to you.
Just try to work on your spelling, and still try to become a police officer. Don't let something stop you is basically my advice.

You might want to work on the spelling. Usually the Civil service exam has spelling portions on it. Also the reports you have to write need to have the correct spelling. If you can get past the civil service exam keep a dictionary handy in the cruiser.

You're right about that pal. Judging by what you've written here you better bone up on it but quick. Granted I've read police reports where cops use poor grammar and poor spelling.
They don't seem to care at times but just wait until some ambulance-chasing attorney gets ahold of it. They'll make mincemeat of you on the stand.
Start reading more and keep a dictionary handy. That should get you on the road to correcting your spelling errors.
