Would you buy a new Christening gown for your baby? MIL just mailed a family Christening gown but enclosed a long list of "do not"s -don't iron it, don't wash it, i'll iron it when i get there, make sure to hang it on special x hanger ASAP, and make sure to return it in same shipping box mailed by x date. not even a thank you or please. plus the neck seems too tiny for the baby (buttons won't close in the back) and it's yellowish-looking. i'm afraid baby spit up will dissolve front part and leave a hole! LOL. Baby is at stage of pulling on clothes and am afraid it would rip. plus MIL disagrees with much of what we do at our house. it's no problem for us to buy a new nice gown we can keep. what would you do? what would you say?

Buy a new gown. Send that one back with a long flowing thank you note expressing how you appreciate her thought fullness in wanting to share that with you and it made you realize just how much you both want to have a special gown you can save for your child that is their very own. No need to be rude or place blame just be positive thankful and remind them how you have learned from them. Since it isn't legal to kill them with bullets you have to kill them with kindness. Many blessings to your family and baby!

This is not about the gown, but about your problem with your mother in law. Grow up, use the gown, follow the directions. This is a family heirloom and the baby is now family and needs to be part of the tradition.

Its your baby, not hers. Explain to her that for you child's christening you would like to see them in a new white undissolvable gown!! She doesn't seem to have any manners, so it should be easy to talk in her language lol
Don't be bossed around by her.
Nip it in the bud now, before she tells you what to do for the rest of your life.
She'll be cranky, but she'll get over it and if not who cares. No one gets on with their MIL.

Your husband should be the one to tell his mother that, "thank you for thinking of us, but we are buying a new christening gown, Mom." Let it end at that. Sounds like she meant well, but also likes to nag. Be glad she lives in another town. Send the gown back to her.

Purchase your OWN gown for your baby. If the MIL wants to see the baby in her gown, when she gets there let her dress the baby in it and take pictures, but use your own gown that you can preserve for your child for the actual christening.

congrats on your new baby. much joy and happiness.i'd buy a new Christening gown. i'd just tell her you thought her jesture was very sweet, but, you have already gotten your baby the Christening outfit. she didn't even tell you that she was sending this outfit to you. you have every right to tell her you had already gotten the outfit that you want for your baby. you don't have to make excuses to her - this is just the way it is - remember this is your child, not hers - you make the choices. good luck.

I bought my own. sure family heirlooms are important to keep family tradition, but there's nothing wrong with starting your own family tradition. dont let anybody tell you that whats making you happy is wrong. go with your heart.

I would suggest you buy your own. At least, you will own no one a favor. With all the conditions attached to it, I will ship it back unused ASAP with a note attached that you're going to buy your own, thanks, anyway.
