I wonder if the chain designed for 9 speed cassette can also fit to the crank that they say is for 8 speed... I want to change my 8 speed cassette to 9 speed cassette, and also I will change my 8 speed designed chain to 9 speed designed chain, I will replace also my shifters to 9 speed..... But the thing is if I can leave my crankset as is???... because I bought a Specialized Hardrock comp with the 8 speed installed drivetrain, now I want to upgrade for 9 speed... Now is it possible to leave my crankset so that I can save money to buy the crankset.. because it is the one with higher value.. I hope you guys inderstand my question.. Thanks in advance...

To switch from an 8 spd drive train to a 9 spd you will need the following.
1) 9 spd rear cassette
2) 9 spd chain
3) 9 spd rear shifter (the shifter MUST be compatible with the derailleur.)
4) The crank-set does not need to be changed. (check the crank-set gears for wear, it would be a shame to install a new rear cassette and chain only to have a worn out front set damage your new parts.)

It won't count interior the slightest as a strategies simply by fact the chain is worried. the ingredient you will pick to be careful of is making particular that the cranks experience the backside bracket. simply by fact of Shimano's ineptitude, we've way too many backside bracket attachment types. till you are able to verify the backside bracket and crank experience, bypass on your interior reach bike shop and have them do the matching. in the event that they go incorrect, then that's their subject. superb of success.

you do not need to change the crankset. but you will need a nine speed chain, nine speed shifter, and you might need a new derailer. it has to work with the shifter. good luck!

I think that you should also replace the rear shifter.
