It was not a faith offering.
Hebrews 11:4 "By faith Abel offered to God a better sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained the testimony that he was righteous, God testifying about his gifts, and through faith, though he is dead, he still speaks".

God didnt accept Cain or his offering. Able brought of the firsts fruits of the flocks. Cain brought of his own work. You can not be accepted by your works Eph 2:8-9. You are accepted by presenting to God his work (Jesus on the cross)>

There is some speculation on that.

1.) Cain was envious of Abel, if he gave his gifts "grudgingly" and was trying to "one up" Able...

2.) Cain was "of the Earth" a farmer and Able was a "shepard" so in that we see a shadow or type of Christ. The Bible has stories in it that allude to the story of Christ... Cain and Able is one of them.

3.) Maybe he knew that Cain was a murderer and rejected his gifts because he was a murderer. The Bible is clear that God chooses us, not the other way around.

There is even more speculation than that, but I believe that is one thing that makes the story so instructive.

To everyone who says "God wanted Blood not vegetables" the law made provisions for bread, wheat sacrafices among others... Proving that you are wrong.

God wanted blood, not vegetables.

To the guy that said he proved me wrong: Those provisions weren't added until the israelites had farmers. The leadership couldn't quite alienate a large portion of their population, especially when they were being fed by that portion. At the point of cain and abel, there were no such provisions, god demanded blood.
