I've made a couple about 30 years ago that I still use to this day. I learned how to make them in high school metal shop, but unfortuntely this is no longer an option for obvious reasons. I used old metal files that I heated, beat, ground down and then tempered. They hold their edge very well and are great skinning knives. One of them is my "fancy" knife that I spent quite a bit of time on to make it shiny and smooth. It has walnut grips and bronze fittings also made in metal shop. The other one is my "work" knife, I was more interested in shape than making it look good. I used a couple of pieces of plexiglass for the handle with a steel butt cap for pounding in stakes. This has been my all time favorite knife. I don't have to worry about banging it around and ruining the grip. I tried making some throwing knives, but those didn't turn out very well, I guess there is an art to making those.

I tried to make one out of a file one time.I got the plans from a book called the poor mans James Bond 2.But it really looked like hell.Last nite on the History channel I watched Modern Marvles Knives and swords. It showed how a man took red hot steel and pounded it into a knife or sword. It was really a good show.

I have made a few knives. One tip. For the handle grip find an old bowling ball (the hard rubber kind they don't make anymore) and saw it into slabs and use that for the handle. Works good and is hard. Doesn't stain when you get blood on it and looks like ebony.

I've made a few in my time. I bought "Kits" that had the steel blanks and handle material to make your own design. Lots of hand time involved but I still have 2 out of 3. They turned out great. You can still buy different kits on line today for about $20 plus shipping. Just enter "Knife Making Kits" into your web browser. Blade blank, rivets, brass hand guard, genuine stag for the handles, all included with step buy step instructions.. Great "Starter" kits are available from dixiegunworks.com

I have only made machete type knives and I made them from old lawn mower blades. They were very crude and only served to clear deer paths.
