I've had or installed just about every imaginable surface to kitchen counters and find nothing beats granite. Even if you buy a low grade it out performs almost any other surface. It is impervious to staining, heat, most chemicals and scratching. It is durable, long lasting and adds value to the home.

I would check with a kitchen specialist, they don't charge for information and advice. They can help you find the counter top that gives your kitchen value yet fits into your budget. I prefer granite. I see marble was suggested but it is way too porous for a kitchen and would require too much maintenance for the cost.

All things considered, it's GRANITE, every time, for me!

Granite LOOKS GREAT, - and it's VERY STRONG, and LONG-LASTING! I can see how it it might seem a little EXPENSIVE, at the time of purchase, to those on a tight budget, but, it makes sense, because it's unlikely to need regular replacing, - this makes it WELL WORTH it, in the LONG RUN!

We put in quartz countertops a couple of yrs ago as a cheaper alternative to granite. They are amazing! I couldn't be happier! We used a brand called Cambria, pattern called Victoria. I'm not saying they're cheap, but not as expensive as granite. ZERO maintainence as well! (My sister's granite.....if she leaves water sitting it will leave a dark spot! Yikes! Apparently it just needs to be resealed, but still. Ours, no sealing, ever!) Love, love, love it!

Formica has worked well for me. A friend of mine has ceramic tile and loves it.
