I live in Oklahoma, right smack in the middle of tornado alley. When severe weather is approaching you watch the weather. You have no choice but to watch the weather, becasue they interupt all T.V. shows. When they tell a particular area to take shelter, you go hide in your bathroom or basement. So far, I've seen two. What it's like, well you go hide in your bathroom or basement and pray it lifts before it hits your house. Which both of them did, fortunately. They can make you feel pretty small and helpless. But our weathermen are very good, and they aren't really much a surprise anymore.

I live in Austin, Texas, which is at the southern end of tornado alley. But the only tornado I ever saw was in California. It was only a small funnel cloud and not a real tornado. A funnel cloud is a tornado that never touches down on the ground, it just hangs below the clouds above the ground. The closest I ever came to a tornado was driving home from work in Austin one night in a bad storm. I should have waited at work, like my wife told me to, but I foolishly thought it wouldn't be bad. While stopped in traffic on a flooded road in torrential rain buffeted by strong winds on a dark night I listened to the car radio as a tornado was reported on the ground just east of me headed west. I made it home OK without ever seeing the tornado, but later heard that it blew the roof off of a building that I had passed 10 minutes earlier. It must have been a small tornado to only damage one building in a crowded city.

Indiana.

I have seen two tornadoes, both from a distance of about 1/2 Kilometer. Once you realize that it is too late to seek shelter, you might as well enjoy the show. Fascinating to see, but I would love to never see it again.
