I killed a Goldfinch today, my cat Molly had it. It was half dead and in shock, so I've taken my advise I have given to others here and drowned the poor thing. I took it in my hand and submerged it in cool water. A few bubbles later it was in peace and out of pain, I feel kinda guilty for taking a life but I thought it was the kindest thing to do.
Dose anyone concur?

Yes, well done!
My cats caught a mouse this summer and it was jumping around with its guts hanging out and i couldn't help it so i had to let them finish it off, but i found it later on the lawn with a terrified look on its face.
I wasn't sure of what would be the best way to put it out of it's misery but next time i think i'll borrow your technique...better than a hit with a hammer!

Very much the right thing to do. good for you for being thoughtful about it and not being squeamish about it! I'm sure a lot of people would have left it to suffer rather than get their hands dirty!
We recently had to euthenase a fish (not quite the same thing) but it was the kindest thing to do, it was getting eaten alive by the other fish and keeping it alive wasn't fair, just like the goldfinch. well done again!

You did the right thing if it had like broken wings or a neck or was bleding profusely. However, I had a bird once fly into my window and I placed it in a quite box with holes for a bit and it came out of shock and happily flew away. Why didn't you just let your kittly finish it off? You shouldn't have outdoor cats if you can't deal with the fact that they will kill wild animals. It's just part of nature. You are okay as long as you didn't enjoy killing the bird. If you did, than you need help ASAP!

I guess it was the kindest thing to do, but goldfinches are the most beautiful birds and I would hate to have to do that.

I do, when a cat has had hold of another animal and given it a going over (as they usually do) the kindest thing you can do is put it out of its misery.

Drowning the Goldfinch was the best humane way of putting it out of its misery.you should have done the same with the cat so I agree with Stuart AB. Ring of Anus, and stuengland 2004. its high time people who keep cats should be made to keep them in cages or runs to prevent the loss of our British Finches also to prevent the spread of diseases which they spread by crapping in other peoples gardens some of the diseases are highly dangerous to pregnant women and children; owners of cats need to show a bit of responsability to there neighbours .children and our wildlife.

you better not be talkin about a goldFISH or is it a wee bird? if its the bird then yea it was probably best but really bro that's just life, I'd let the cat carry on, cats do that sh*t all the time, but imagine the pain it felt when it woke to realise it was submerged under water, holding its little breath for as long as it could, then the wrenching pain of the water filling its lungs.
am sorry bro i couldn't resist, don't feel bad

dude why feel guilty for putting the bird down man, if you had left it to the cat it's suffering would have continued until it either died from heart failure or been munched to death and it would not have been that nice for it. i would have done the same thing if our cat brought a bird in to the garden or house.

You definitely did the right thing, cats like to bring their owners' presents, it's always the right thing to let them go without pain (e.g. cats jaws)
