The idea of gods came before people understood science. If you had no idea how things worked, natural disasters would seem terrifying and so people sought an explanation to things they were unable to understand. Over time humans began to realize the true nature of how the world works but religion had become so ingrained in what people are that it was hard to let go. The other reason that god(s) will never completely go away is that humans have a massive fear of the unknown, the largest being death. Having the belief in a deity gives people hope that there is a purpose to life other than living and that there is a life after death.

Not quite.
We do serve a purpose..... much like the appendix.
For the appendix is the real decider of who goes where.... Heaven is only for those who still have their appendix!

I totally disagree with you!
How can you say that we have no purpose? We exist because of God's love to us. I think you ought to do a little bit of soul searching..and see or listen to that small voice in your heart.
I think you have been mislead and your heart has rejected every Good Teachings you have been taught...Dont worry about it...Find a place in your heart and soul and I gurantee you...You wil find the answers!
Its Never too Late!
God Bless.

We do serve a purpose as far as Earth Life is concerned.
This is our purpose:

We are the only creature that can go beyond the Earth. If we fail in this endeavor then we are just apes.

Ouch! That's a tad dark and pessimistic question, even for you Lord Vader!
I prefer to be the Lord's Hands. Sometimes idle and clumsy, but if put to task, highly skilled and working in his name.
Peace!

Sometimes I think I'm God's belly-button lint, or maybe God's toe-jam.

You are so blind.
The appendix is part of the Immune system.
Christians do serve a purpose.

Perhaps god is our phantom limb. Sometimes we think we feel something, but it's not really there.
