that we should try to understand what god is? I mean if something has created the universe then it's far beyond our human understanding and can only be of much higher inteliigence than human form.

yep- thats the problem with humans. We think we have to have all the answers. There is no way we could ever comprehend God and his plans for the universe. Its beyond anything we could ever imagine. We limit God and put him in a little box of what we think he should be.

You have taken the line that most religious people take; and that is: If it cannot be explained, then invent a mythical, magical creature or creator of some sort and give them the credit.
Let it stop there and people will make a god of it.
That`s how all religions start, from ignorance, guessork, supposition and the need to make it sound and look better than it is.

Why would it be beyond our understanding? One characteristic of high intelligence is the need to learn and understand, so a higher intelligence would want us to learn and understand.

On the other hand, I'd say it is more arrogant to presume to speak for a god.

It's not arrogant to try to understand, that's what we're supposed to do - try to understand things we cannot. If we don't we'll live in an even more intolerant, ignorant world. It's those who try to understand things that make it better. That's what makes a nice person.
It is arrogant to say I know the truth about god (like jeh witness do).

People are arrogant, God is like the sands on a beach impossible to countor understand

Why arrogant? Do we not to try to understand everything we can about our environment, human physiology, space, etc, etc?

God wants humanity to know him, otherwise Jesus would not have come to Earth in human form, albeit a concept we cannot fully understand, yet we readily accept this when watching sci-fi films, etc.

The Bible is part of the means that God uses to reveal himself. His word is found within it and reveals all the parts of him that we can understand. If we have a relationship with anyone we spend time with them, getting to know them, and so it should be with God, then we would see that it is natural to be curious, but God is more than willing to reveal himself to those that truly seek him.

I understand your point and it's a fair question. God himself says in Isaiah that "my ways are higher than your ways, my thoughts are higher than your thoughts." That said, his word the Bible was intended so that we could get to know him, if not fully comprehend the scope of his power. James 4:8 says "draw close to God and he will draw close to you".

Do you not think its quite silly ...........to presuppose the existence of a creator when there is no evidence whatsoever?

Everything we observe about the universe is consistent with natural laws and explanation. So much is sub-optimal and obviously the result of chance that the hypothesis of an intelligent designer is not only unnecessary, it is laughable!

God created us because He wanted something that He could love. He WANTS us to ask questions. If a child asks you a question about yourself do you shout at them for being insolent? of course not. it's the same with God.
God bless

I think it is arrogant for someone to insist that their own beliefs are correct and superior to that of others or that God is poised and ready to send them to hell. That we cannot fully understand God does not mean that we are not meant to try to understand him.
