Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday, is the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent in the Catholic religion. Mardi Gras is the last day of feasting and celebration before Lent begins. The 40 days of lent is supposed to be a time of sacrifice and introspection. Many practicing Catholics give up certain foods during Lent. Mardi Gras Day is the day they feast before receiving the palm ashes of penance on their foreheads on Ash Wenesday.

Everyone pretty much answered What Mardi Gras is.

No one does Mardi Gras like New Orleans. We have parades two weekends before the Mardi Gras. There are throws (such as beads, plastic cups, stuff animals, etc). On Mardi Gras, people dress up and just have a great ol time. Tourist go crazy about because they have never seen anything like it before (or they have come before and loved what they saw). Locals love it because it a party time. It is a great time to hang out with friends and family.

Some good answers so far, but as a New Orleans native I need to correct a common misconception.

Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday". Mardi Gras is one day and one day only.

The season is called Carnival Season, not Mardi Gras season.

Carnival officially starts on the Feast of the Epiphany, Jan 6th, however the public Carnival celebrations start only about two weeks before Mardi Gras day.

This year Mardi Gras is January 6 - February 5, 2008
The official beginning of the Mardi Gras season is Jan 6, which is called Twelfth Night (12 days after Christmas). On that cold night, a krewe called Phunny Phorty Phellows has their drunken streetcar parade down St. Charles Ave. Most of the big parades start two Fridays before Mardi Gras Day. From this point on, parades will happen everyday until Fat Tuesday.

Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday (the first day of Lent). During Lent it was not "right " to eat desserts, eat meat except fish, drink alcohol
or party. So people used the last day to party big time. Now the rules are not so strict for religious observance

Mardi gras is a time for parties and parades, costumes and music and alot of alcohol. Although the others above me point out the "religious" aspect of it...most people that go to mardi gras dont go for any religious background the event has. I hear it gets pretty wild. Google New Orleans and look for Mardi gras links on those pages.

The G could continuously be capitalized. Your spell verify would not comprehend it as a trip, and thanks to this that is not capitalizing the G. even nonetheless, that's the call of trip, for this reason making it a suitable noun. that is fat Tuesday, (Tuesday Fa t= Mardi Gras) and you capitalize the finished difficulty, only as you will possibly capitalize the Y in the trip "New Years"
