perhaps because cows and sheep in fields always poke their heads through the fence to get the better grass on the other side?

The point of this saying is that everyone always looks over the fence/river and THINKS that the grass looks greener over the other side, until that is they actually go and have a look and they realise that they are no better off than they were in the first place!

Take a married couple who are not getting along very well. The guy sees his single mates going out on the pull every weekend and thinks "Oh I really want to be doing all that fun stuff!". So he leaves his Mrs to get in on the action. He soon realises that not ALL his mates manage to pull a 'bird' every weekend, in fact not very often at all! He starts to feel lonely during the week and that sleeping alone every night is horrible. No-one to come home to and all that. This is when his ex wife should say to him, "Well, you did think that the grass was definitely greener on the other side!" . Only now he has crossed that line/bridge/etc, he realises that he was much better off with his Mrs!

I guess it's because you are always looking for the best and someone or something always seems better..We criticize ourselfs too much if we think its always greener on the other side... Its good to have the greener grass sometimes and be proud...

People are so often envious of what someone else has.Or someone elses lifestyle. And this is what they mean by the grass is greener on the other side.
People want what they can't have and that makes it attractive. It's because people want their cake and to eat it too-another quote.

"The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence."

People are never satisfied with their own situation; they always think others have it better.

I have a thought perhaps grass-is-always-greener people are full of codswallop.

but the grass isn't allways greener on either side, the fence is a good place to be, then you can see that all grass is the same, and that you have it good, no matter where you are. remember, you are right were you need to be, at this exact moment. live, and love.

i will give this to you in two ways.
first: in northern minnesota, people come to my town to get big deer, we go to their towns to get big deer, its just because we believe change is good. and other places MUST be better than what we have now.

Second: how many people are immigrating to america because of their situations in other countries, yet we like to leave because our president is a complete idiot. the grass seems greener for them, and for us.

Because when people have a problem in their life they often move to another location hoping that things will be different when they get there not realizing that the problem is inside of them so when they get where they are going that place is screwed up too ......

People always want what they don't have is what this boils down to. Like you have a car, but you want a better one. It's all about material things.
