For me the tightening wasn't painful but I was sore after and ate soft foods for a day. Then the pain went away. I took Tylenol and if I was real achy I would put an ice pack on my face. It actually helped. But great pain? No.

It varies from person to person.
So some answers will not be the same as some.
Dakota Fanning has had a ton of work. Her teeth were in the worst shape some dentist had seen, so maybe you can find things she has said about it if you want a perspective from a bad case.
Some people barely notice anything.
I do not know your age but at some point you can get newer kinds of braces then the old ones. I have heard the newer ones are better then the older ones. I have also heard that if you are still in your teens and they remove your braces in your teens or twenties, your teeth [some times] go wrong again so you have to do it all over again :/ It's not ALWAYS the case but sounds like it happens more often then people admit (some people just refuse the braces the second time).
I think the clear ones are the ones people have the least pain with.

In my experience, getting the braces put on was not the painful part, but the tightening was a 10. The good news is that the pain lessens quickly. The bad news is that they get tightened every few months. Listen, braces are a pain in the butt, but the final result is well woth it. Good luck.

Getting them on did not hurt for me it was just uncomfortable trying to hold you mouth open for a really long period. The tightenings that you get every four weeks is were the pain comes in. For me it wasn't too painful maybe a four, but it goes away after a day or so, just take some pain reliever like Advil and you'll be find.
I'm getting mine out on October 17th. Yay!

It is like someone squeezing your finger. You get used to it. A scale of 2-3. It lasts for a few hours then the rest of the time between visits you have no pain.

Don't do it. The ends do not justify the means.
