I have a friend at work (seriously, it's not me), who always does floating poos. They never go down the toilet after just one flush.
I was discussing it with him and we were trying to think why this might be.
I suggested that he has a lot of air in his guts, possibly because he is constantly nervous (he's homosexual) and as he's nervous he subconciously swallows a lot of air and has shallow breathing.
might there be any other underlying reasons?

Swallowing air leads to gas, burping & belching. Not floating stool. Floating stool has to do w/ fat absorption. Some doctors feel "floaters" as they are called are good because there is less fat absorbed. People w/ colitis & chron's disease also have flaoters because their stool passes so fast through the bowel it doesn't have time to absorb so much, for these people it is not good. Also, the longer the stool stays in the colon, specifically the large colon it absorbs more water, hence it is heavier.
If he is having other problems a visit to a doctor may be advised. Such as a sudden change in bowel habits (going more often, pain, bloating).
Hope this helps

Poop will float or sink depending on what you have eaten. Dietary changes can lead to an increase in the amount of gas produced by the bacteria that live in the gut and it's the gas that makes it float, not fat as someone mentioned.

I did part time cleaning for years and have seen them all and I feel there is nothing to worry about if they float or not Ive even seen some that were so heavy they had a string attached so they could be lowered without breaking the bowl

Fat Floats. The more fiber in a diet, the more water is absorbed back into your sys. making your stool buoyant.

most likely fibre intake. the amount of fibre you eat affects whether your poo floats or sinks.
i dont get why they dont go down the toilet though, sounds like a broken toilet!
i doubt any nervousness would affect poo!

The reason why this occurs is because his body doesn't absorb fats, so in a way he's lucky because he will never put on alot of weight.

Too much refined carbohydrate in the diet creates gases which then make the poo float.

Your question seems to suggest that being homosexual makes him 'constantly nervous'. Why?

Tell him to go see his doc and get his gall bladder checked out. This can be a sign of something not quite right with it.....
