What distances for these calibers? .223, .308, 45-70.

Spooky, your answer has a flaw...2,6XX feet is only half a mile. A mile is 5,280 feet. You may want to correct your answer before everyone else sees it's wrong also.

One thousand yards is no great stretch for the .308 or the .45-70.

Back in the late 1800's there were plenty of long range rifle matches, out to 1,200 yards, and the .45-70 was a frequent winner. Just this past summer, some friends were telling me of ringing a metal target at 956 yards with their .45-70 rifles. They were shooting at a range at the NRA Whittington Center.

The 308 is going to be the longest, most leathal round. The .223 and then last the 45-70 for the length of the shot. The 45-70 holds its energy a lot better at distance than the .223, it is just too slow to get very far.

Of the three? The .308, I believe will definitely shoot further than the other two calibers.

As a matter of fact, the Army has brought out of retirement some M-14's ( or the SOCOM, a semi auto commercial M14 chambered in .308 ) for use in Iraq since impact power at long range is somewhat lacking for the .223 round. At 300-400 yards the .308 still packs plenty of punch.

the .223 is good out to say 1 mile the .308 1 1/2 miles if not farther even though if you shooting a mile (a heck of a shot almost imposable) even the earths rotation can throw your shot off so never attemt this shots and the .45-70 id say about 500 yards

the .223 can go out to a little over 600 yards. the .308 can do damage out to 1200 yards. the longest shot from a 45-70 with iorn sights was i think 1300 yards. dont litsen to "LUV4GUNZ" he dosent know what hes talking about. the .50 BMG has taken Taliban out at 2,657 yards which is roughly over a mile and a half in the hands of Rob Furlong, a Canadian Army Corporal.

Carlos Hathcock used a .30-06, not a .308 as the unnamed fellow above stated.

Of the three you picked, the .308 is definitely longer ranged than the other two.

Former Marine Corp Sniper Carlos "White Feather" Hathcock held the record for 308 caliber in Vietnam for shots just under/over a mile away.As far as I know the other two calibers you mentioned haven't ever been recorded.....It would be anyones guess.......

In gunsmithing school we were told the .45-70 had killed indians at a distance over 1,500 yards. I can't remember his name, but a known sharps shooter (sharps rifle, hence the name sharpshooter) killed an indian who was riding a horse away from him at 1,200 yards. Not bad for 'ol smokey pole.

All are used at 1000 yard matches of one type/style or another. What is the root of your question?
