I have a car which I park on the street. I want to know if it is against the law for someone to remove that cover from the car, or tamper with it in any way?

thanks for your answers guys. some mixed views there. So, the real question is do duty officers and alike HAVE to replace the cover once they have finished checking for permits, tax, etc? And if so can you do anything to enforce this? I think I might cut a hole in the cover so the tax and permit are displayed.

Theoretically yes - it could be deemed as criminal damage or theft if the cover was taken away. In practise though, I doubt it would hold up.

I'd say stealing other people's property is illegal, but do make sure whether (as someone has said) it's legal in your area to cover your car when it's parked on the street, if not you might find that a law official has taken it away and end up in trouble for it - not worth it!
If you're worried about a place to park your car where it can be covered, try finding a garage - if you live in an apartment building, there might be one underneath, you might have to pay some sort of rent though.
Hope that helps.

In short NO.
Although as the answer above if they took it away it would be theft or damaged it/ the car, would be criminal damage.
If the person was removing/ touching the cover with the intent to do one of things above then its still not against the law but the police would caution the individual and warn them against there actions if you wanted them to.
If they were doing this to annoy you and it is clearly this as they do it again and again, after being asked not to do so by you or not then you still could ask the police to warn them and if it continued then they could be prosecuted for a public order offence.
Obviously if it is a police officer/ Traffic Warden doing so then they would only be doing so to check that the vehicle is taxed/ resistered. As the vehicle would still need to comply with these rules.

The best advice I could give is to check with your local law enforcement. It seems as though most laws protect everyone except the honest hard working individual. Heck, your town/city may have a law against covering a car parked on the street!

Making the identification easily obtained without removing the cover, is the best bet. A car parked on the street and covered is sure to attract attention of the law.

Provided you are legally parked and your tax disc and number plates are visible, it's against the law for anyone to interfere with your car.
If your tax disc or number plates are not visible, anyone whose business it is to know the registration number of your car or whether it is taxed, can remove the cover to find out. However, they should put it back afterwards.

no, the police/traffic wardens must be able to see the Road Tax on every car while it is on the road.it is against the law to have car on public road without a current and valid tax disc on display.
