>Use system cleaning tools to get rif\d of most junk from your computer. Here are some good and free cleaning tools:
CCleaner - http://ccleaner.com/
Advanced Windows Care Personal - http://www.iobit.com/advancedwindowscare...
Glary Utilities - http://www.glaryutilities.com/
>Use a proper anti-virus, anti-spyware (both should have real time protection) and a firewall. Here are some free ones in case you want them:
- AVG Free: http://free.grisoft.com/
- Windows Defender: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security...
- Comodo Personal Firewall: http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/...
Don't use more than one anti-virus or firewall at a time, as it can cause driver conflicts. Also, keep all your security software updated. Scan your computer with your anti-virus and anti-spyware every 1-2 weeks.
>Keep at least 30% of your C: space free.
>Defragment your hard drives once every 1-2 months.
>Don't use too many auto-start programs. Just keep the ones related to your security (anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall). You can disable other auto-start entries from Start > Run > msconfig > Startup.
>Don't use too many short-cut icons.
>Keep your Windows (XP or Vista) updated with the latest security updates from Microsoft.
>If you are going to use Windows XP, 512 MB RAM will be enough (1 GB will be better). For Windows Vista, 1.5 GB is required for smooth functioning (2 GB is recommended).

The question is what has reduced it. You are probably running a lot of stuff, and some if it may surprise you.
Download Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel and disable everything but your anti virus software. And update and run a scan of your antivirus software, too.
