I would suggest either a 1st or 2nd generation BMW M3. Since you are already looking at the 3 series, you will probably like this car, and the early ones were one of the most iconic cars in the history of sportscars.
Also I wonder why you consider Honda junk? I am a huge Honda fan, but I also like european and american cars. But Honda's are in no way "junk", they are one of the top manufacturers in reliability, and even if you don't take care of it properly, they can last 200K miles easily.
Anyways, you are entitled to your opinion, so my top suggestion is still the M3.
Good luck in whatever you decide on!

Can you afford to maintain a BMW?

You have to realise that prestige cars which are bought by people who earn six figure salaries tend to cost more to fix than ordinary cars so there's a good chance you won't be able to afford to run it.

For that kind of money though you could easily get a new Hyundai or Kia which you won't go broke trying to maintain and you could probably get a Toyota or Honda new for that price too (if those are US dollars then you could).

Besides, if this is your first car you probably don't have much experience at driving so high performance should not be something you should look for.

Get a job and you can get a Toyota NEW for same price and not spend money on repairs. Getting a sports car that old will break you and be in garage more than road.
