I kind of have my own little theory. For one thing, Christians are an easy target what with the whole turn the other cheek and love your enemy thing. But I have been in the Yahoo Christian chat rooms and a large percentage of the people in there are atheists or satanists etc. I can't help but think that maybe deep down they must actually WANT to be convinced. Otherwise, why bother? I know they think they are intellectually superior because they believe they have a 'scientific mind' and therefore anyone who believes in him must be intellectually inferior...but still, why bother lol.

And "Kailee"..... How many times I see the "takes a drink" thing here lol. What is that supposed to mean anyway? I don't think I've ever seen it in any other category. A way to sound nonchalant I guess.

lol i kno if u dislike everything abt the religion and have no intention of converting, why put urself in pointless discords? some say "just for the fun of arguing with a christian", well that just makes them petty and pathetic

Then you would be wrong! I have read them say that they come for debate, and for enlightenment. You don't have to believe in god to get enlightenment! anyone can get that. I have no interest in what other people think! Fundies, and mainline Christians have attacked my former religion (LDS) to the point that I only look upon them now with scorn, disgust, and contempt! And now I am slowly turning atheist in the way I think! So, now, I come on here to read comments, and thumbs up when I agree, and thumbs down what I don't! and when the mood strikes me, I will answer a quesion, ot I will ask one, when the mood hits! It depends

I think you need to do a little research. You might start with the title of this category: It's not "Religious". It is "Religion and Spirituality".
Atheism does not say a thing about spirituality other than that there is no God. There are many spiritual people who don't believe in a God. Buddhists do not believe there to be a God who is in charge of everything, and they are a quite spiritual people. Buddhism is essentially an atheistic religion.

Too, there are entire churches based on atheistic fundamentals.

Religion and Spirituality is a forum to ask and answer questions regarding religion and spirituality. It is not a Christian only club. It is not only about the Bible, but all religions and all spiritual positions. As such, atheists have quite the same right as others to discuss their beliefs. I think it is quite narrow of people to assume that because a person doesn't believe in a particular God, that they must be something other than spiritual.

I have one better theory ...... for fun :P.

Christians turning over the other cheek? Which christian? The only that send the entire army to demolish an innocent country because he thinks he is right and his god tell him do to so?

I was a christian before I was virtually thrown out of the church because I asked too many questions. We would certainly like it if you can convince us you are correct, but for the past 20 years, none has managed to do so, some were even atheists now.

You hit the nail on the head with the intellectually inferior part.
But that's all. I will never be a Christian. I do not see the benefit of dismissing the facts of science. I have never been to the Christian chat rooms but I enjoy reading everybodys opinions and expressing mine.
Taboo subjects like religion and politics are easier to discuss in this type of forum.

But the bottom line is that everytime Christians answer tough questions, they always start with "the bible says" or take the stance of you have to have faith. Suicide bombers have even more faith (as evidenced by the words 'suicide' and 'bomb') and their own version of "the bible says"!

We hardly ever the words "I don't know"!

Atheists haunt the religion and spirituality, (you know the stuff Xians claim is Satanic?) category because they are in denial about being a Religion. There's not that much difference between believing in a specific God with knowable attributes and definable qualities and BELIEVING that there is No God. Both require tremendous ammounts of Faith and Gullibility. Not to mention just plain pigheadedness.

Agnostics haunt the Religion and Spirituality section both because we DO believe in the realm of the Spirit and continue to try to learn more about it and because Atheists are hilarious and Christians would be if you weren't so violent and determined to overthrow Democracy in favor of a Muslim style Religious State.

You got one thing right, I actually really want to be convinced! But wait, I don't feel intellectually inferior, I just go along with what science provides for me, and you could do the same. Atheism is looked down upon to Christians claiming were,"lost," and that is inferiority right there.

I'm here for the same reason you are, to participate. This category isn't just for Christians! That was very insulting to a lot of people, including me.

All I've been doing for the past hour is answering questions to people that pose questions to atheists, because they want answers. And you say R/S is only for you?

Oh, for the love of god, would you people quit asking this? It's only been asked about a billion and three times this week. I'm getting kind of tired of every fourth question being "Why are atheists in the religious section" or some variation thereof.

Your little theory is utterly and completely wrong. I'm here because I like to discuss religion (or lack of religion, as the case may be). You can try your damnedest to convince me, but if you think you're going to tell me something I haven't heard ad nauseam, you're probably very wrong.

*takes a drink!*

One, this is a spirituality forum as well. I may not be religious, but I certainly am spiritual.

Two, research. I learn a lot here about other religions that would take me ages to find out on my own.

Three, to defend ourselves. Because it's never good to only hear one side of an issue when people are looking for answers.

Edit: Just curious, why are your Questions and Answers private? I didn't even know you could do that o.O

Edit 2 (reply): It's kind of a game played in this forum where when a question is asked again and again we take a "drink". Namely, "why are atheists in this section?", and "Pascal's Wager" (it's safer to believe in god than not because you lose nothing).

Thanks, I needed that.
I come here to be entertained, and to occasionally tweak the noses of the self-righteous.

When religion is removed from politics, when the folks who want to turn our free society into a Christian version of Iran are finally defeated, when someone running for office can claim to have no religious beliefs and be elected anyway because he's the best candidate, when religionists stop trying to condemn private adult behaviors, and when religionists stop feeling free to refer to atheists as "poor Americans" and "unpatriotic," then we'll find another forum on Y!A. Until then, you're stuck with us. Get used to it.

I don't feel I am necessarily intellectually superior to religionists. However, the willful ignorance among believers is nothing to be proud of, either.
