Generally the big companies are going to have the most openings (Allstate, State Farm, Nationwide). Most of the time, they are looking for someone with no experience that they can train. You do have to have a bachelors and a good credit score.

To be an adjuster, you need to be organized, able to think on your feet, able to handle stress, able to handle irate customers. No matter what - never take it personal.

Also- not all insurance companies are created equally. Some insurance companies are awful to work for. Typically these are the larger companies. If you end up working for one of those, stick it out - get 1-2 years experience and then move onto a better company. In your daily dealing with other adjusters -try to make contacts.

Once you get hired by an insurance company. Look into joining your local claims association and taking additional classes (Offered through the insurance institute - your Associate in Claims and CPCU).

Not everyone is cut out for a career in claims. You put a lot of your heart and soul into it and get very little recognition or thanks in return. But it is something that will keep you busy and mentally challenged.
