To: the person Above me. :l
Ashley, We're not posers.
We don't want to "Fit In"
Why in the world would we want to fit in by eating something?
How would we?
:l Say you have a Pig Sausage
And a Soybean Sausage.
It's still a sausage... It's just not from an animal.. -_-
then you have a Cow Burger
And then a Veggie Burger.
It's still a burger, But not from an animal.
You see, Until you can tell me that a Burger or a Sausage is part of an animal's body,
Then you really need to stop answering and being an obnoxious snob.
[:
Have a wonderful day!

As vegan/vegetarian products are developing, we need to find names for them. The easiest way is to use an already familiar name. People are afraid of trying new things, if you call it by a name they are familiar with, they might be less afraid of it, and who wants to learn a whole new vocabulary anyway??? With a familiar name, people know what to expect, it means it's the non-meat version of an already familiar food they already know how to prepare. If you used a new word for "burger", nobody would know what it is and how to cook it and nobody would purchase Boca Burgers!
It's ironic, when I started being a vegan, I absolutely avoided those products, I went away from meat not to eat meat substitutes! and I had a whole new world of veggies, grains, fruit and spices waiting for me - yummy (not being ironic).
Little by little, I have introduced those products back in my diet and occasionally enjoy a Boca "Burger", how can you call it anything else, it's got the look of a burger, the same bun, the same onion, lettuce, tomato, OK, I don't use mayo but Veggenaise, but it really looks like the real thing, even tastes better in my opinion + does not clog your arteries.

So what would you have us call them? Veggie burgers, veggie sausage (or soysage), veggie bacon (or tempeh bacon), and other "animal" names are ways of making meatless eating more accessible to people. As long as I know I'm eating plant foods and not animal foods, I really don't care what it's called.

It's not at all about substituting meat, it's about finding alternative protein sources (which in our American culture usually means chicken/pork/beef/fish). Meats aren't the only substances with protein, but people who were not vegetarians but then became vegetarian, sometimes need "familiar" looking/sounding things to eat and/or cook with.

Vegetarians don't have to eat meat subs if they don't want to. I don't understand the rest of your question.
