I say, let each driver/team choose their own make (Chevy/Toyota/Buick/Ford/Honda/Other. Drivers buy their own cars or get sponsorships from the auto-manufacturer and a donated stock car (notice I said "stock" car - as in the same car you buy when you go down and get one at the corner auto dealership). Drivers invest their own money or get sponsors to contribute money to change the car to make it more competitive.

Total value of all car mod's cannot exceed $7,500 - to be spent how ever the driver/team wants. Limitations are placed on what kind of car can be used (must be a 4-door sedan, no SUVs or crossovers) and what can be modified (such as no mod's to original dashboard, suspension, body panels, etc.).

Jay - that's fine if you like the current formula, but don't call it stock car racing. And I have to disagree with you on the true stock car idea - how boring is it to watch the 30 versions of the same car go around the track and the first guy that doesn't wipe out in the pile up wins?

Me again - I agree with you that today's NASCAR race cars take manufacturing design differences out of the equation since everyone is racing more or less the same car and that is a good thing. I also believe if it went back to slightly modified stock cars then one make of car would dominate and that would, in turn, inspire the different makes to become competitive and we would see more innovation and sportiness in the cars rolling out on dealer lots. I agree that racing in this format would be boring on the current NASCAR tracks. These races would obviously be slower but not necessarily less entertaining if the tracks were smaller, tighter, and some rules were changed. Maybe a new league of racing needs to start here in the states.

The deal is, NASCAR stock car racing hasn't been done with anything close to a "stock" (or even heavily modified) car for decades. In fact, you cannot buy anything close to a NASCAR vehicle in a showroom. For example, the Ford Taurus is a front-engine front-wheel drive vehicle with a V-6 engine. The racing "version" is a front-engine, rear wheel drive car with a V-8. The only resemblence between NASCAR vehicles and stock vehicles is the body, and even that is questionable because NASCAR makes the teams alter the shape of the body so that no one brand of vehicle has an aerodynamic advantage. Same with the truck series. Take the body off either a NASCAR car or truck, and you will find a chassis that is almost identical to all the others. It's all about making money for the sponsors. They are rolling billboards. The best thing is that the cars are all so closely matched that it becomes a battle of skill between the drivers and the teams rather than a battle between manufacturers. The biggest problem I have with NASCAR is that it lets the NEXTEL drivers participate in the Busch races. This is the same as if MLB players were allowed to play in the minor leagues just because they felt like it. How would you feel as a Busch driver if you were trying to compete and advance to the NEXTEL series if you kept having to go up against NEXTEL drivers and have your azz handed to you every week? You would never have a chance.

It hasn't been about stock cars for years. Most of the
changes have been for safety reasons. Lately the body
changes have been made so that no manufacture has any aero-dynamic advantage. Go to any small track around the
country and see if they are driving any thing like you suggest.
You'll find that nobody is driving front wheel drive cars. With
the possible exception of some road course tracks. And
those will probably be Mini's or something like them.
And there is no need to change the NASCAR name, it's now
and has been the name of the racing organization

I like cars as much as anyone and fast cars particularly, but for most of my lifelong devotion to NASCAR, I've always thought the people more interesting. The person in the car is what keeps me watching.

After the way the manufacturers acted the last time they were heavily and directly involved, believe me when I say I can do without all that aggravation. I ask my contemporaries to harken back to the 1960's. Remember what it felt like to have your favorite driver's bad a** fast car outlawed for competitive advantage?

As far as I'm concerned, when the manufacturers got all pissy and stomped away from NASCAR in a tizzy saved the sport!

It's not coincidental that NASCAR not only has survived the lack of detroit steel, it has flourished.

You are right when you say it is not about Stock cars anymore!
It never was completely about Stock cars!

I would also like to rewrite the rule book.
But none of us can do that, so we haft to take the sport as it is!
I will complain about it, but it has and probably always will be my favorite sport!!!

Do you have any idea how boring and lame it would be to see a race between a bone stock, street legal Impala, Fusion, and Charger? It's ok the way it is, but I'd relax the rules a little on the suspension end of it. There's lots of dumb rules on things you can't do.

I agree. I've said for years this NASCAR crap we have now should go back to Saturday night racing-run what you brung. You watch-soon all the cars will be made in China, shipped over to the USA for paint. Oh yeah. Decals. Gotta have decals, they are all the same.

yes!!!! a super speed way with corner speeds of 80 mph
this would be like watching cars on the freeway, now if you want to say nascar needs to stop calling it "stock" cars you have my support, but if you really want to watch stock automobiles racing at Dayton id say that would have to be the most boring thing on television, unless we are talking exotics, now id love to see some ford gts, vs ferrari enzos, vs saleen s7 and so on,

I know this is a very old question, but I sure wish you'd started such a racing association when you posted it. It could be somewhere by now!!!
And, I'd be in the stands for every race at MIS (My home track).

Only thing I think is silly about your idea is the "4 door sedan" requirement. Watching 6 cyl Fusions racing at 90 mph around a 2 mile track would be kinda boring (no offense meant - just my opinion).

But I would like to see STOCK cars - that I COULD actually buy - race, but fast ones (Mustang, Camero, Corvette etc)!!

I'd (personally) want only SMALL mods done, and ONLY for safety (roll cage, harness etc) so the drivers wouldn't be afraid to race hard (or of course, ya know, die all the time)

It would be awesome, it would sell cars, and it WOULD have fans.

I guess the only counter argument I could see someone making would be that you can see something similar at small local tracks every Friday night (we've got 2 in Michigan).

But a pro circuit would be GREAT. Start it!!

Why don't you just watch touring car racing if that's what you want to see?
