Hi we went to Australia for two weeks and did a road trip all the way in a motor home,I had at the time a 1/5 year old,5and a 7 year old.
For the older ones I had enough paper and coloring pencils and a holiday diary for each one were they had to draw pictures of they saw and right a little story, then i asked them if they wanted to practice they're times table, so i wrote down the times table and they had to fill the answers, the one with the best answers would win a prize, we sang songs together, they toke they're game boy's, we played i spy with my little eye... game, for the little one i toke her favorite toys and some new ones to so she would keep busy but i only gave her one new toy at a time in different days, if they were really bored we would stop and go exploring for a wile and then back in the car.
good luck and enjoy

You already have some good 'traveling gear' for your kids. It would be great if you can strap the DVD player to the back of the front seat so they won't have to have it in their laps, and it would be even better if you could have two of them, one on the back of each seat. I don't think you'll have to stop that often. Try to go for a longer stretch than 2 hours. If you pack a cooler with snacks and sandwiches, you'll only have to stop a few times for gas, bathroom, and maybe one of the rest stops they have on the highway.
Do not pull over on the side of the highway unless you have a real emergency. Like--say for instance your 5 year old wet his/her pants.. I don't consider that an emergency for pulling over on the highway. You can drive til you see a store or rest stop or gas station and take care of the situation there.
Pulling over on the side of the road is sooooooo dangerous! The only reason to do it would be car trouble (flat tire, etc.)
You can get CD's with children's songs on them----Disney's sing-a-long is one that my daughter loves.
Best wishes and have a safe trip!

2 hours really isnt that long. My son and i drive an hour almost everywhere we go because we live out in the woods lol. He just looks out the window. I would suggest taking snacks, a favorite kiddy cd of his, and maybe a book for him to look at if he gets bored, but really 2 hours isnt that far. Have fun!!!!! We took our son to an amusement park last year right at age 2 and it was about 2.5 hours away and he did fine. We didnt take anything along to entertain him with. He just looked out the window and sang songs to himself. Have fun!!! Zachary had a blast! We went to Del Grosso Amusement Park and i was so impressed with their kiddy section and how many rides that were available to my child. He absolutely loved every second of it.

give them a list of things they have to try and see on the drive and if they find everything they get a surprise at the end, like 2 red cars 4 trucks a cow little things like that and along those lines obviously they are to young to be given the list but you can ask them to try and find the trucks and then when they have done that they can then be told the next thing to find.. also maybe take some plane paper and get them to draw some of the things they see along the way like the cows or even draw your sisters house just little things like that can be amusing for them! if all else fails a good old song of "old mac Donald had a farm" can never fail its always a goodie with the young ones lol
