Pros: One of the most reliable, durable, and tough revolvers made to date. It's chambered in the .357 magnum, which is a great self defense round, and can also chamber the .38 special with no modifications, which is cheaper and easier to shoot. The grips on these are pretty nice. It's double-action, like most revolvers, and you don't have to worry about cocking it before you squeeze the trigger, but you can if you want a lighter trigger pull. It's a pretty nice looking pistol(but still looks politically correct, just in case you end up in a court room), if you're worried about that kind of thing. Buying this pistol will piss off at least one liberal, such as the guy above me here.

Cons: It's a revolver, so reloading a cylinder will take longer, even with speedfeeders, than sliding in a new magazine, however if you're not going to need more than six shots, this is irrelevant. It's a mid-size revolver, so while it still is possible, it won't be especially easy to conceal. It's chambered in the .357 magnum, which is pretty powerful, you'll have to put up with the recoil from about 700 lb-ft of muzzle energy.

Overall, I'd say if you've held one, and you're comfortable with it as well as the .357, by all means buy one.

Ruger Gp100 Modifications

PROS: Great revolver, certainly in the top modern revolvers.

CONS: I hate the grips. I think the Ruger revolver grips look cheesy and feel worse. It's personal preference, never been a fan of thses, but that's easily fixable.

Biggest Con is that Bill Ruger and the Ruger family feel it's their place to 'negotiate' my Constitutional rights with the Anti-gun crowd.

Actually comparing the GP 100 to another revolver like S&W, Taurus, I actually like it better. This is my next firearm. It is a little thinker than the Taurus model 66 and I like the fit better. I did not even both to pick up a Smith only because of their price. They make awesome revolvers though. I also like the wood inserts in black rubber grips. I found one for about 550. This is also in IL near cook county. Prices are much higher than other states.

Only con is that it's so heavy.

If you're specifically looking for a iron sight 357 for hunting, I think this gets serouis consideration over the blackhawk.

They are good solidly built revolvers. In a powerful yet cheap to shoot caliber. I like the cylndier release on the Ruger more than I do a Smith&Wesson's. If you find one at a good price pick it up and you won't regret it

Other than the size, nothing. The gun is durable, and can last forever using full charge magnum rounds. You are NOT likely to wear this gun out.
