When there are bones and skin in the chicken stew, and the rest is undefinable muck.

Because she just put the whole chicken in the pot and then poured in vegetables and batter and left it to cook.

All night long.

My aunt and her family were never able to cook. That was such a disastrous day. Never agree to eat dinner at the home of someone who cannot cook, unless they are ordering out.

Seriously though, I'd suppose the signs would be obvious details. A really clean kitchen. Eating out often. Fridge and cupboards either empty or full of ready meals. Few appliances. No cookbooks. No bags of flour or rice or other cooking staples. No spices aside from salt or pepper. Not hosting family holidays or events. Never mentioning what they made for dinner or any other meal. Bringing non-cooked items to gatherings or potlucks.

1) Directly after eating the food they cooked, people run for the bathroom
2) When they offer to cook a meal, there is a resounding "NO"
3) When you see smoke coming from the kitchen, and you know it's not BBQ night
4) When even the dog won't eat the table scraps
5) When you look at the food, and you say, "Oh, hamburgers tonight" and the cook says, "No, it's fish"
6) When all you see in the kitchen are empty bags from fast food joints.
7) When they have the same leftovers for weeks on end.

People always say no thanks we had dinner on the way over.

My sister and I discussed this very problem. When my Dad remarried, our step Mother always wanted to cook us lunch when we visited. Her cooking was so terrible, I don't know how they managed to eat it every day. Since it was a 2 1/2 hr drive to their house we always stopped and had a restaurant lunch before we got there and told her we would rather spend the time visiting instead of washing dishes so please don't cook for us. Or we picked them up and took them to lunch. We always manage it without tell them the truth.

The person who has attemped to cook something, comes out of the kitchen drenched in sweat and with a few more grey hairs than they went in with. Also you repeatedly hear the microwave beeping and the food you are served is cold in the middle.

3) Possess good food culture - arn't scared to cook with curies, garlic, coconut milk, spinach... ie know the flavours...

4) Don't set the smoke detector off when they cook

Regular calls to the fire dpt. :)
Kidding.
The signs are obvious:
1) They avoid long recipes (with a lot of ingredients)
2) They tend to get nervous around the stove
3) They serve raw food (no pun intended)
4) They use non bake recipes
5) Their food tastes bad, and they are always on tip of their toes when you try it
6) They use basic recipes and ingredients.
Bye. :)

Kitchen is spotless because they always carry-out or take away the food.

And when you are invited to that special dinner (look in the trash first - it's probably been purchased and the containers from the restaurant are hidden under newspapers). Evil grin :)
