Loans - if an American student fails to repay the loan the government garnishes the persons future wages and tax returns until the debt is paid. But in the case of an illegal who fails and who isn't able to achieve a degree the government has no way to collect the money, as the illegal will slip right back into the shadows leaving taxpayers with the bill.

Grants - determined by income of the students family. Of course the illegal population will claim no income or as little income as they can get away with and any money made under the table will go unreported, so in essence the illegal will be taking money away from poor families who have reported what ever meager incomes they have.

Work study - each school only has a limited number of work study positions, and who are given these jobs? Why the poorest students of course, so the same rules that apply to grants also apply here, American families that are law abiding citizens are again at a disadvantage for being honest.

Who is eligible to receive Federal Student Aid?
To be eligible to receive federal student aid, you must meet certain requirements. You must:

* Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen
* Have a valid Social Security number (unless you're from the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, or the Republic of Palau)

straight from FAFSA (where students apply for aid)

The Dream act will give them green cards making them eligible non-citizens

Interesting point. Didn't think of it. My coworker from years back was being called by credit agency for years. While owing tons of money to the credit agency, he bought a $200,000 house in the Philipines during that tie period. I ask him about running to the Philipines and leaving his debts. He just smiled.

You're incorrect about grants. Students invoking the DREAM act would not be eligible for Pell Grants. And fraud in filing applications for aid is taken seriously, and this would likely result in nearly immediate deportation if the student were caught.

Since finishing college would put DREAM act people on the road to citizenship, these students would have an awful lot stronger incentive to finish than nearly everyone else. I'm not too worried about students dropping out and defaulting on their loans. I am worried about one thing, which is grade inflation in colleges that might result from bleeding heart types who know that failing an illegal immigrant student will push him back underground, and so will pass students who don't deserve degrees. I think this could lead to a significant reduction in value of college degrees, and this is the most serious possible consequence of the DREAM act.

All qualified students in California deserve the opportunity to attend an institution of higher learning, and the California DREAM Act brings us one step closer to that goal,” Speaker Núñez said. “Preserving road blocks that prevent students from achieving their true potential is no way to run a state... It should be available ONLY for the legal residents and citizens. And yes that does mean the anchor babies, But NOT their older siblings if the siblings were not born in USA and are not citizens.

Yes. In addition to all this, the Dream Act covers even more than education. It provides a "fast track" to citizenship for these same illegals, the ones whose parents brought them here, who will then be able to do a "family sponsorship" for their illegal parents and extended family. In actuality, the "Dream Act" is a mass amnesty bill. Nobody talks about that portion of the bill. This is an attempt to drive amnesty through, under our very noses, by try to make it "palatable" to those who aren't paying attention.

Yes, I was well aware of ALL the ramifications of this Act. This is what makes me see red: of all of those idiot fat cats supporting this BAD act... none of their children will be affected by this. Their kids are already in private schools and will NEVER have to apply for a scholarship or any kind of assistance. It's just one more cross they want the middle and lower classes to bear!

To rawr: I'm sorry for you, if this act goes thru you will end up paying in the very worst way!!! YOUR education is at risk just like every other American's. Let me be one of the first to say welcome to America and thanks for doing it the right way! I know you are caught in between 2 worlds and as a kid that must be hard.
