It seem really pointless, why close an hour or two early on sunday? and the mail doesn't even go on sunday. whats the deal?

nick k - I do have a job, and work almost full time. Also, you don't work "24/7" thats is why there is more than one employee working there. moron.

also, how is it a day of rest and keeping it holy and all that if a store closes at 8 pm instead of 10? they are still working, still it isn't really keeping it holy, is it?

Overhere stores are rarely open on Sunday at all, but they do close a few hours early on Saturday. Sunday is because of religion (which does indeed only make sense if they're closed all day), and Saturday I think is for the smaller, family-run stores. Not all stores have many employees and can just work out a schedule; there are still plenty of smaller stores where indeed the owner is in the store all the time when it's open, or where he/she has just one or two employees. It'd get too expensive to hire more help, especially since many people want to be paid more for late weekend hours, and there are less shoppers at that time. Even for the big chain stores that'd make it somewhat more expensive although they could likely afford it in the long run; many of the small family stores can't.

Supposedly: it is so the people will get off early enought to go to church.
A lot of truth about the seventh day being a day of rest. But there done that on too many 12/7's and by end of second week you are just dragging around.
It is as much about giving the body a day to rest and recharge as much as it is keeping the Sabbath holy.

Stores set their hours based on sales and staffing. The better businesses care enough about their employees to allow them time off of work. Sundays are, usually, slower for businesses and the day most employees tend to want off to spend time with family or whatever. Same with the mail.
Your convenience is important but they attempt to balance the needs of all. If it creates problems for you, perhaps better planning would be the fix.

Generally, it's to be in observance to the sabbath day which 'supposedly' is sunday. But many years ago most stores would not open on sundays so everybody could go to church.

People are off on Sunday ==>> They do their Sunday shopping early ==>> Nobody is shopping Sunday evening ==>> Stores lose money if they stay open.

it's selfish people like you that stores stay open so many hours as it is. When do those poor retail workers get ant time off? Are they supposed to work 24/7 just to make you happy? You need to get a job and see what it's like.

in the Bible it says that Sundays are non-work days, they are a day of rest. Not all people follow the Bible but i guess it is a day of rest.
