The best foolproof thing to do is using Linux Live CD; the utilities there will tell you what is the driver that suppose to be used right down to the very OEM chipset of the Northbridge and everything card or USB it encounters along the way.

Recommends Puppy Linux for it, for the required software is bundled in, but that can easily be outfit as addon to a Slax system.

No.

The scan is usually free but downloading the drivers is not.

To find drivers:
Google the manufacturer's name and go to the manufacturer's site for you computer/motherboard; video card; sound card; network card; printer; scanner; mouse; web cam; etc. Each site will have a support section to find the latest drivers and download them. You will need to know the make and model number. If you do not know the make and model number run Belarc Advisor and look in Windows Device Manager.
