Well, to start, remember that there are two sides of clothing collecting. One is the "wardrobe" side, and one is the "laundry" side. If the laundry is out of hand, it is a tell-tale that the wardrobe has some problems as well. Since your closet is where the wardrobe lives, it makes the clothes inside your closet part of the problem.
So whether you think you need it or not, whether it is difficult or not, you need to at least empty your closet and take stock of what is in it. You want pieces that you love, and that you reach for over and over, and not much else. Choose pieces that are versatile by occasion AND season. Many times this means you want solids and separates that mix and match and layer. You can get more outfits from a few well-selected and harmonious pieces than a whole closet full of garments that only get worn in a certain way or with a certain other piece.
That may be all you need...decluttering and retooling your wardrobe, so that not only your closet space but the items inside, work hard for you. Much of organizing is trying to create space for too many objects, but when you have less to put in the closet everything else is easier.

To increase my closet size, I bought a closet organizer. On the left I have a long section for dress pants, and under that is my hamper. On the right I have two rods for hanging shirts, in the middle I have shelves for sweaters. I hang my long-sleeved shirts on the top rod and my short sleeve/3/4 length shirts on the bottom. I have another closet in a different room for jeans and t-shirts. I organized my shirts by color and need to do that with my pants too.

I organise by dividing into coats, jackets, skirts, shorts, dresses and then tops (this last group I also hang sorted by colour). I've tried a few ways, and, though seeming quite rigid, this really works for me. I also store away off-season or out-of-fashion items. Items which only serve to support an outfit, like singlet tops, I store sorted by colour in a drawer.

try a closet organizer system (space saver). Rubbermade, and Closetmaid makes them or I remember a store that installed specialized closet organizers but I don't know the name.
