First of all, you need to start with voice lessons. People don't realize how many muscles are involved in vocal production, and a good voice coach will help you develop those muscles. As you mature, your voice will strengthen on its own, but you need to make sure you know the right way to sing, so you don't permanently damage your voice.

Secondly, you need to find a style of music that fits your voice. Are you better at pop music, or classical? Are you a country twanger, or is folk more your style? Study the different genres available until you find one that you love and that suits you.

Lastly, you need to develop a thick skin, and realize that not everyone can become a super star. People may love your singing, but some of them won't. The ones that don't love you might get pretty mean. You need to be tough enough to listen to what they have to say and sort the truth from the nastiness. Even your worst critics might say something that you can use to improve yourself. Realistically, you may not ever become world-famous. However, you can easily find a niche and make a living as a professional musician if you're willing to work for it.

Good luck!

Don't forget not all "professional singers" are good singers. Maybe your "average" voice, as you call it sounds great to others. Pick the style of songs you like, then pick songs you want to sing. Pick the key not too high not to low. Experiment by singing along with the radio and c.d. t.v. etc. until you are comfortable with the range. Never push your voice, just let it come. Relax and don't be too critical with yourself. Listen to your pitch, in other words are you hitting that note right on - if not, practice closing your eyes, listening to whatever, and imagine a horitzontal line with the note on it. Don't think of how high or how low it is, if you are in a comfortable key, you can always improve your pitch. Articulate, practice breathing from your diaphragm (look that up on the net if you don't know where that is), and always pick a song that you love to sing. If you have the desire you will achieve. Don't call yourself "average" anymore, you have been given a talent, that is unique to you and you can make it into something that everybody would love to listen to. Make the song your own, your unique own, don't copy anybody else's style. At 16 you have a lot of years to enjoy the experience of singing to yourself, or to an audience. Sing for the love of it.

Practice, practice, practice. Hard work and dedication. Then more and more practice. If you're serious about it, and if you don't have one already, then get a singing teacher- it'll help you no end.
Confidence is also a big factor. When you have the confidence, you can sing out loud and clear in the comfort that people are enjoying hearing your voice. If you can, enter local singing competitions. From them, you can gain constructive criticism and even prizes. Either way it's good for you and it'll improve your performance in front of others. Plus, it's good publicity :P
Some technical tips: breathe from the stomach before you sing, open the jaw wide, listen to your notes: if they're flat, smile a little, if they're sharp you're overshooting and it's not as high as you think.
If you've got any more questions, get in contact and I'd be more than happy to answer them.

First, make sure you want to go pro, and that you love it enough to do it.The music world is rewarding, yet harsh at times. Understand that you will be heard (and judged) by many. Believe in yourself. Never stop.

Second, expose yourself, if you can, to other musicians. And pick up an instrument yourself. Learn to read, write and play music. Embrace it completely. Understand also that it is one of the only universal languages, and you are blessed to speak to any one in the world, regardless of language barriers. Everyone can feel joy, sadness, etc. in the music.

Third, if you ever achieve professional status, please refer to the preceding paragraph. Do not get a big head, so to speak. You are not better than everyone. You are a messenger, psychiatrist, a release. You'll relate to people in ways you've never imagined. Music, at least to me, is a gift from a higher power. DON'T GO BRITNEY. Most musicians who have crashed in history got a big head from the fame. Idiots.

Fourth, feel what you are singing. If you don't believe it, no one will.

Above all constant practice. Starting now. Most true musicians I know wake up with a song running through their head. Sing anywhere you want and/or can.

I picked up instruments and reading/writing in the last 10 years.
I've been singing for 37 years. In front of from one to one thousand people , literally.

Not once have I not been nervous. Before a show, one person, or a thousand people. But I gotta tell ya, the feeling I get when I relate to those people is like nothing else, ever. It's unique.

My act is never perfect. A true professional's very rarely is. That's what makes you a pro.

But it's damn good.

singing is really not hard if you learn a few good habits 1) breathe from your diaphram not your throat. 2) everyone has a range ,the trick is to not go beyond it .2) timing of your breathing to say words is crucial .4) probaly the hardest thing is to be relaxed
