If, as some claim, there is a God that loves us, then why does he/she/it allow such disasters to happen? Does this not show either A: That such an entity does not exist or B: If it does exist, it is not benign and is therefore undeserving of our worship?

That's apples and oranges.

The question is: Does God exist?...yes or no.

If so, then why...blah blah blah.

Matthew 24:6-8, The time is coming when you will hear the noise of battle near at hand and the news of battles far away; see that you are not alarmed. Such things are bound to happen; but the end is still to come. For nation will make war upon nation, kingdom upon kingdom ; there will be famines and earthquakes in many places. With all these things the birth -pangs of the new age begin. God bless you and your family. In the name of Jesus Christ

Because this life is not paradise/heaven. It is a test. Are we grateful for being given existence and all of the numerous blessings that you chose not to remember while pessimistically asking your question? Are we loyal to the one who gave us these blessings? If we are afflicted with harm or difficulty does our loyalty remain the same?

If we live in love, gratitude and loyalty to our creator and seek his authentic guidance applying it to the best of our ability then have we passed the test and only then we will have the utpoian paradise of bliss that you are wanting without doing anything for it.

All the answers are in the Bible...Maybe they are Tests, maybe people are being weeded out, they may have done something in their lives to be undeserving/deserving; no one honestly knows. There are certain things that happen to certain people and no one can say who they are or who they will be. In all honesty, you must open your heart and truly believe and the Lord will speak to your heart. Maybe not right away, not tonight, not tomorrow, not next week or next Yr. But, you must be watchful, study and remember to always to have an open heart : )

I'm a muslim and I will try to answer your question, when God created Adam,God said"behold I have created the first human being and I'm sending him to Earth for Testing, can he still be faithful / loyal to me as my slave?"And Earth is not Heaven ,whereby you have to hunt for food and lodging.God have given Adam the knowledge and now is the time to apply that knowledge to create your own tools and survive in the wilderness of Planet Earth.Hmm? this stone if I rub one side against another boulder, will create a sharp stone but what will I use it for? and as for the earth quake, diseases,I did mentioned earlier that this is Earth and not Heaven.Welcome to Planet Earth, are you new comer here? And another thing whilst you are here on Planet Earth, follows God's rule and regulation,do what he tells you to do and stay away from the thing that God forbids you to do or you may get into trouble either on this Earth or in the next life after the death of this body that you are currently using. What is God's rule and regulation?that is for me to know and you to find out. God did gave you a brain as a tool to use on this Planet Earth. And may the real God guide you to the truth or light , Amen.

You might also ask... is prayer ever answered, does God ever intervene, does God care, etc., etc..

All of these questions resolve into a single answer for a single question... is there a God or not...??? Yes or No.

The trouble with questioning "God's" actions or inactions is that it allows for conjecture... it demands of those who believe in the reality of god to reconcile and rationalize how god decides things, and this ultimately leads to the problem that there are no right or wrong answers. Anyone can make a guess and anyone's guess is as good as another's. Putting words in God's mouth is child's play. Rationalizing for him and making up his mind is equally easy.

The only questions truly worth asking are those that don't call for guess work on the part of god-believers... Ask them if they've seen God and when... what was he wearing... who else saw him? Ask them if they've heard God and when... what did he say... who else head it... do you have a recording? Ask them for his autograph... his thumb print... his DNA sample...

Nothing else will ever shake them hard enough to disturb their delusions. They will make up lies and tall tales and excuses by the dozens whenever they are asked anything which allows them latitude to create and invent an answer.

If they are asked to answer even these tough questions: http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb62/Randall_Fleck/Amputee_GIF.gif

.. they will do it with ease.

To some, these things prove the very existence of a God.

When sin has plagued people's way of life, disasters are a form of punishment.

When man begins to fancy himself invincible, God has countless ways of proving otherwise.

If there were no diseases, earthquakes, genocides etc.

would that prove that there is a God or that this entity is or is not benign?

There are more than that: Read 2 Timothy 3:1-5 and think them for a while..

That is why they exist...God's time is near.

Have you never read the bible ? This is not a god of love and kindness. Wiping out entire cities , requiring human sacrifice , sending plagues , ordering generals to massacre his enemy. Doesn't sound like a loving and forgiving god to me.

God demonstrates to those who love and seek his truth that this worlds problems is because of sin.
It is the reason God came to the world in the form of a man to overcome temptation sin and death so that all who love him and accept the atonement can live eternally in a world without sin where there is no pain and death
