I'm planning to buy a home theater system but I'm not quite sure what brand or model to buy...

A tend to disagree with the other post about "name brands". First off how much do you want to spend. How big is the room you are putting this in, and how tech savvy are you? First off if there isn't a money constraint, go with separates. Buy a pre-amp, amplifier(s). Anthem makes a great product. Loudspeakers can be pricey. But you need to go out with your CDs or DVDs and listen to what you think sounds good. The brands I would recommend you cannot find at Best Buy or Circuit City. Those would be Paradigm, Martin Logan, B&W, Canton, Definitive Technology, Boston Acoustics. Notice I did not put Bose in there.

If you want an all in one job look at a Denon product for the reciever. Polk Audio makes some pretty cost effective speakers in their RTi series. Onkyo and Yamaha make a fairly decent reciever too. Just look at the products and how many speakers you want to hook up.

TVs are a whole new ballpark. 1080p all the way. Look at Mitsubishi, Sony, Samsung. Look at DLP or LCD. If you have a good salesman they can be a lot more elaborate on their specs and what makes them good.

DVD players... Do you want HD DVD/ Bluray or standard DVD. Standard DVD I would go with an Oppo Digital Product. I cannot predict the future so I am not getting into the hi def formats yet.

I hope this helps. I could go on a lot more about this but if you would like more info you could always email me or check out some sites like www.hometheaterhifi.com , www.oppodigital.com , www.denon.com

I recommend to go for the big names like Sony, Panasonic, Phillips, etc. They are good quality and sound quality is amazing.

OR if you have got some extra money to spend you can consider a personal build home theater system:
An amplifier (i reckon Yamaha, Denon)
With surrond speakers and sub woofer

Or you can buy a bose (very expensive)
But u will be amazed with the sound quality and the amount of bass that it delivers!
