Thou shalt know Jesus and follow Him is the whole of the new covenant by the way. Those who walk with Jesus and know His voice don't need laws because the whole of the law is already written on their conscience, which is part of their spirit. The law is for sinners and those who walk with Jesus are not sinners, only those who fall away from Him or who do not come to Him. It is impossible to keep the law of Moses (the 10 commandments). Why do you think they constantly had to make animal sacrifices? Because they simply could not be righteous and holy on their own. Anyone who says he or she keeps the ten commandments and is righteous and holy is a LIAR. It is impossible. Walking with Jesus with the help and guidance of His Holy Spirit is the ONLY way to be righteous and holy. Forgive me for deviating from the original question, I had to say that because there is so much confusion about this. LOL at "Thou shalt not be flippant" :) If you're talking about people being disrespectful, I agree with you that Christians shouldn't behave like that. It's wrong and un-Christian. There is no need for us to be rude and insulting in any way. Jesus Himself would never do that. I admit I have slipped up many times on that one. But believe me, the Lord has no favorites. He doesn't tolerate sin at all and I have been paddled many times :)

The command states, "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor."

This means you should not deliberately mislead your neighbor to a false conclusion to his detriment. Misleading can be accomplished not only by lieing, but also by selectively telling the truth in such a way so as to deceive.

By the way, Jesus' definition of "neighbor" was very broad. It could also include strangers we meet.

The command also includes the phrase "against your neighbor". Sometimes people ask hypothetical questions such as, "If you lived during World War II, should you lie to the Nazi's and say you don't know where any Jews were hiding if you really did know?" After all, that's lieing. In this case you would not be bearing false witness against your neighbor, but rather bearing false witness to save his life from unspeakable evil. That would not only be ok to do, but required. This sort of lieing can only be done in very extreme circumstances. Don't use it to rationalize lieing for your own benefit. That is never proper.

RE:
What does it mean when they say THOU SHALT NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESSES in the 10 Commandments?

It means lie or lead people to beleive otherwise. It is worded strongly for a reason. We should not bear false witness against others. That does not mean that it is considered a sin to lie for a reason. If someone bought a dress and asked me if it made her look fat, I would lie if necessary and say NO. That is not bearing false witness. That is giving her an opinion that I believe is false. For the same reason, I can lie to someone and say I am busy on Saturday night rather than say, "I do NOT want to go to your house and I do not enjoy your company."

Don't lie - especially don't say somebody did something when they didn't or didn't do something when they did.

It's like don't testify falsely against somebody in court. But also, this can apply when you are talking to other people. Don't spread false rumors or gossip about people. Don't say people did something they didn't do.

The idea is that everything that you say should be trustworthy and should accurately reflect what is true.

It means you shall not state something that isn't true. It's like lying in a court of law. If you are a witness against someone, and you are lying, you are a false witness.
