Hi,
I have studied, and now speak, quite a variety of languages. My favorite, and one that I have found most useful, is Mandarin Chinese. This language is becoming very useful as China becomes a global player--there is currently a very high demand for English translators. This is an easy language to learn in the sense that there is very little grammar, most of the work in learning this language comes from memorizing characters and learning vocabulary. On the flip side, however, it's not such an easy language to teach yourself, because it would be difficult to learn the pronounciation of words.
In that case, I suggest Spanish, which is a great language to learn, especially if you are living in the United States. There are plenty of good "Self-teaching" Spanish manuals out there, and there is a need for bilingual speakers.
If you simply want to learn a new language for the pleasure and beauty of words, I would suggest French (Oooh la la!) or Arabic. Good luck choosing!

To be honest, i have been studying languages for years. throughout my research, i have found that one of the most profitable languages to learn would be chinese. Chinese is one of the main languages to learn right now. The reason being that right now the middle class in china is expanding and many jobs have been and are being created. Many american businesses need liasons for their chinese contacts. The problem is that Chinese is one of the most difficult languages for native english speakers to learn. So, some other languages that are very helpful and pretty commor would be spanish or french. The word order is pretty much the same as english and we have most of the same phonemes. They may not be the most profitable in business but they are still pretty helpful. I hope that helped...

Spanish is the second dominate language in this country, but Mandarin CHinese is the most popular language in the world. However, I would have to go with Latin simply because every other language has roots in Latin. Plus, you would be one of the few remaining people on this planet to know Latin. It's also a beautiful language which I hope to learn one day when I ahve the time.

I guess it would depend on what you thought about doing with the other language if you became fluent speaking. If you are looking for a language to help you become profitable in this country then I would learn spanish. So many spanish speaking people from many countries are here and still coming. If you want to go world bound then Chinese (manderin) would be my choice. The united states though is close to many spanish speaking countries and I would say that is my choice.

I suggest Spanish, its a very useful language to know. One of the most spoken languages in the world, of course besides Chinese (Mandarin) and Indian. Chinese is one of the most difficult languages to learn, just think of the Chinese alphabet, it takes a lot of time to learn that. If you are not planning to go to China, in my opinion Spanish is a very good language to know. If you know Spanish it´s easy to learn Italian, Portuguese or French, as they all have Latin roots. Good luck whatever you choose!

If by "profitable" you mean "useful" - then Spanish; apart from English it is spoken in more countries than most other languages.

I would think Spanish would be profitable so you could communicate with a growing Spanish speaking American consumer.
You could be a software tester and test the localized products.
