Thats called split op, it's only for reserves and NG. My little bro did that and hated it, said he'd rather it was all together. The year off really gets you back out of the military regimen and makes AIT that much harder.

Listen up 16 year old nasty civilian. Do not listen to the previous two morons and future ones that will attempt to answer a question that they cannot possibly fathom answering. There should be a reason you want to join the ARMY. If its for the money for college or a summercamp adventure, don't join the military! I'll break it down to you barney-style.

Marine Corps - doesn't except wimps, just the .000000001% that have what it takes to KILL and defend the greatest nation in the world. It is the greatest fighting force that has ever roamed the earth. You'll have pride in yourself, be able to do what 99% cannot. Motivation, dedication, spirit in God, Country and Corps is what its about. And no, they don't brainwash you, you hippies!

Army - you'll go on an adventure and be somewhat displine and be given college money... blah blah blah

Navy - you'll be board because most every sailor goes on ship for a minimal of six months or so and fades out because of the lack of motivation, "excel your life" (into boredom)

Air Force - displine does not exist here, not raggin' just tellin it how it is. you'll do something mechanical and is closest to a 9-5 job

Coast Guard - so few of them, they actually get to do some neat things, but even fewer GG's-men than Marines, rather boring, plus you've got to go to a basic in Connecticut that's easier than slicing wheat bread

Talk to your local recruiter, it is called "Split OP" you enlist as a Junior in high school and go to basic over summer break and the finis HS and go to Advanced training after you graduate.

Lala: I've got no clue what you were trying to say, can you edit your answer and make it clear?

Birdee20, you are really a sad, sad person, you can sit in your home and use your right to freedom of speech yet disrespect those that are willing (or thinking about it) to go out and sometimes die for that right, your right (s). If you are a coward or think of nothing but your personnel advancement and prestige and are willing to TAKE those freedoms others have died for, be thank full that there are those like this questioner that want to join and serve to protect morons like you.

You just answered your own question: Finish basic training--which will have you assigned to an AIT school to learn a particular assigned job in the Army.

You sure you want to go to Iraq??? It might be a good idea to wait during war time to join the military. Go to college, instead.

Split train. I don't suggest it, but you can join the reserves under that option. You have to talk to a recruiter.

the RESERVES offers a split training option, NOT the Regular Army.

Don't do it! Never. Ever. Do not join them. The recruiters will lie to you and before you know it your mother will see you again in a casket!
