It's a question possibly more for Australian here as I'd be interested to hear if there is any law in Australia but everybody's input is welcome. I've got a 7 year old rescue dog who is great and frankly not one of those dogs obsessed with food at all. She has a delicate stomach and the vet prescribed a special diet which we are following to the letter. Now the other morning I noticed there was a cooked bone (soooo bad) that obviously the next door neighbour had left for her. I politely went to her and explaining that this was not the correct food for her and would make her sick. I thought she had understood. Yesterday I went out to find that her kids were throwing chips at the dog and she was obviously eating them. Now I haven't see the neighbour and did not get a chance to confront her but I'm concerned that next time those idiots might feed her something really bad like chocolate. I know it sounds silly but is there any sort of law to prevent this from happening here in Australia.

I went to the police because our neighbors from heck were throwing stuff like that in our yard.. we foung a WHOLE dead, rotting catfish in their area!!! He told us quote: "build a fence" like a fence would keep them from tossing stuff over.. So... lol... we tossed the dead rotting fish into their swimming pool...lol... this was the last straw after the chicken bones, fish heads, and all the other stuff we had found in the past. So, after we tossed it in, they stopped tossing stuff in our yard.. lol.. so maybe that will work for you? lol. The mom might not be aware of her kids.. so take plenty of pictures, and show her.

I Think You Need To Talk To Your Neighbour Again And Make It Clear That Your Dog Should Not Be Fed By Anyone But You As She Has Special Needs And Shouldn't Be Eating More Than You Are Giving Her.
I'm Not Sure Bout Animal Related Law But You Could Ask Cops Or The ASPCA If There Is? An AVO Or Equivalent Would Show Your Neighbour You Mean Business.

First of all, no it's not ok for your dogs to kill cats but you have your dogs in your own yard and can't help if your neighbors let their cats wander around. I would definetly try and make sure you get your dogs to know killing cats is bad whether that is by taking them over to a cat they've attacked and telling them "NO" and then putting them up inside alone somewhere for a little while, or something along the lines. It may also help you to talk to your neighbors and let them know that your dogs are very good dogs but have problems with cats and though you are very sorry you can't help that the cats are coming into your yard and that they may want to start keeping their cats indoors more often. Or you don't even have to tell them that you could just say you're really sorry for your dog's behavior but they are good dogs and just happen to really not like cats.

I doubt there is any law against feeding things that aren't poison. You can A) train your dog not to eat things without permission or B) talk to your neighbor again, preferably with the kids this time. Explain to them that the dog can only eat special food, and that while you know they are trying to be nice, they are actually hurting the dog. Maybe you can allow them to give the dog approved treats which you supply (on a limited basis so they don't stuff the poor thing).

If you find your neighbour is not cooperating (and if I were you i would try again to speak with her and explain the situation with the dogs diet.) You catch more bees with honey than with vinegar!!!
If you still find its falling on deaf ears you could speak to your local shire /council who will get in touch with the Ranger for your area
Ask their advice and I think you will find they will speak to your neighbour too and that may be enough
If you are still not getting the response you need go to your local citizens advice bureau they have lawyers available and can offer you legal assistance
If the kids just want to feed the dog (some kids just need to be educated)maybe you could invite them over when you dog is to be fed so they can see the importance in her diet and you can educate them as to why your dog cannot eat their food
Also the parents, this way they can appreciate your situation a little better and you remain on good terms with your neighbours which is better for everyone
good luck

Since you've already explained the dogs delicate stomach issues to your neighbor and it's gone unheeded. Explain to her the cost involved for vet trips,to treat - lets say chocolate poisoning - raw hide treats , ect. That should any of these dangers to your dog occur, She will be liable to cover the vet bill. Give her a firm warning about keeping her children from feeding your dog as well.

I truly feel for you and your situation.
Good Luck

Well that's a hard one.. I don't think there is a law that specifically says ' Thou shalt not feed thy neighbours dog '
But once you tell them NOT to feed your pet, they are then going against your wishes.. It is possible it might fall under something like tresspassing!? You will want to contact someone in your area and find out what can be done.. I would put up a sign that says ' Please do not feed the dogs ' So they have had fair warning that you don't like it.

I'm pretty sure there is no law for this sort of thing. The only thing I can think of is tell your neighbour that her kids have been feeding your dog chips. She may not be aware of it. Or maybe you can tell the kids that they are killing your dog with what they are feeding her. They may not know what you told their mother before. Good luck. ;)

i'd suggest to go into your local police station and ask them that question. And possibly the RSPCA for ideas/law.

Sorry, but unless there are people on here that are well versed in the law, they will not be able to give you a proper answer that will hold up with the police.

If not, you may have to keep your dog inside or build a pen for your dog int he back yard.

Hi Laurence,
Not knowing the animal laws in Australia, I can't comment on that. But if I may suggest bringing a bag of your dogs favorite treats to your neighbor and explain to her and there children, that these are the only treats she can have or she may get sick and die. I'm sure they have only good intentions and mean no harm to your dog. This may work. Good luck.
