I have a six months old puppy who I bathe two times a month but my parents complain that she smells bad a week after I bathed her. I think it's because she's very energetic--running around outside like crazy and such--and she has medium length hair. Can I just rinse her with water (as in not using shampoo) to get rid of the smell or would that still irritate her skin (as I heard that bathing a dog too often will do that to the skin). What can I do to get rid of the smell?

Seeing from the answers I have so far I have more questions: are baby wipes safe to use on dogs? What do you think is a good mild shampoo? So it is alright to bathe a puppy more than two times a month if the dog shampoo is mild enough?

I've been around some dogs that have a stronger odor then others due to the breed. Sometimes it's an indication that there is something wrong health-wise. I have a shelti mix that seems to have a stronger body odor than my other dogs so I bathe her in Top Performance All Natural Green tea & Mint shampoo. You can get it from most big pet stores or from www.PetEdge.com. Sometimes it's just the shampoo doesn't clean or rinse out well. Also, with this shampoo it's mild enough that you can use it every week.
If this doesn't work, have the vet check her out to be sure she doesn't have something else wrong like an impacted anal gland or thyroid problems.
Hope some of this helps.

Tell your parents that your puppy will outgrow his doggy odor. It's a safety mechanism so Mom or another adult dog can find a pup quickly when their is danger.

Dogs are pack animals and every adult has a responsiblity to keep pups from danger. Dogs most effective sense is their nose so pups scent glands go into overdrive so every adult in the pack can find a puppy who has wandered off and would make easy prey in the wild very quickly.

Tell Mom and Dad at six months the doggy smell will go away in a few weeks or so. Each dog is different, but it will happen.

If you use a dog shampoo, you can bathe your dog every week. It will not harm their coat. You can add a tablespoon of olive oil to their food every other day, too, to give it lustour. This smell may also be linked to the food you are feeding. I'll almost bet you that it has corn or another grain in it.. You should be feeding either a raw diet or Innova EVO. I feed this, and my dogs hardly smell at all.

Stop bathing her so much, you're making her smell. Seriously.

By bathing her that much you are putting her natural skin oils into overproduction and that is creating more odor.

Dogs only need to be bathed every few months. Daily brushing in between will keep them clean.

High quality food also helps with odor. High quality foods include Canidae, Innova, and Wellness to name a few.

You can get a leave in Conditioning spray to use on your dog between baths. There's a product called "Buddy Splash". Or you could get a waterless shampoo and use it on your dog in betwen the baths.
