After 44 years of practicing and teaching karate, Grandmaster Kim Soo is not about to hang up his martial arts uniform. He still leads 15 classes a week in vigorous self-defense exercises that promote mental and physical benefits.
His perseverance recently earned him a 10th-degree black belt-the highest rank in karate. The promotion is so difficult to achieve that it is often awarded posthumously as a ceremonial honor to those who have contributed substantially to the martial arts. But because Kim has trained consistently for nearly half a century, he managed to receive this distinction at the age of 55.

Kung Fu does not use degrees and belts. They use sashes. The Japanese use belts or Obis. The highest you can be is 10th and honestly there are truly only a few out there though MANY claim to be tenth but really just are on paper.
I cannot see how you can be a tenth Dan at the age of 40 for example.
Dans and belts are over rated. skill and knowledge mean more, the USA has really turned belts into a money making thing.
IMO.

The Kuikkiwan doesn't certify living 10th Dans. It is only given to persons who have devoted their entire life to the study of TKD and diead as a 9th Dan. As of last publication, there have only been about 10 of those. But that's Taekwondo, not Kung Fu.

No. And 10th degree is completely political or "blood" based. It's traditionally reserved for the "head" of a style.

In some arts the best you get is black or 2nd degree. Anything above that is ceremonial, inflated, contribution to the art. In other arts they do go higher. Black belt inflation took place in the early 80s I believe in the US.

You can have as many as you want really. There are over 3000 different martial arts, more appearing every day since anytime someone wants something different they just start their own anyway.
Look in the local directory you will find 100's of masters of styles who only have one club world wide, the one they started themselves.
Its just like religious cults. As long as you get a few people interested you can write your own scriptures.

Jigoro Kano, the founder of Judo, was awarded 12th dan because he was the founder.
I believe it was by the Emperor.
