You'll have a hard time finding a good stud from a reputable breeder....and I'm assuming you would only want to deal with reputable people?

1. Breeding for any reason other than to better the breed is irresponsible. Breeding just because "you would love for her to have pups" is a VERY wrong reason to breed....
2. There are health clearances that any reputable breeder would do PRIOR to breeding....OFA, CERF, hips, elbows, eye disorders...
3. Reputable breeders prove their dogs are breed worthy by showing them in conformation and performance events. They don't breed just because they want their dog to have puppies... Is your dog a Champion?? Does she have points towards her Championship?
4. What are you going to do with the puppies in the litter? A reputable breeder will have homes and deposits lined up BEFORE the breeding takes place.
5. Reputable breeders have a sales contract...stating they will take their puppies back at any time in their lives should the owner have to give it up...Are you willing to do that?

These are serious questions that you should ask yourself. There is a LOT more to breeding dogs than the reason you stated.

Do you want to be a backyard breeder cranking out a litter of poor quality puppies,,,OR had you rather do it right and produce dogs that are the best quality and an asset to the breed?

Please do not breed your dog. There are many health tests you need to put her through, you need to have her papers from the AKC, she should have titles or at least some recognition of some sort. No, this is not discriminatory, and I have NOTHING against dogs that are not of champion bloodline, but do you know exactly how many things can go wrong if you breed a dog with potential hereditary diseases you were not even aware of? Do you know how many puppies get put to sleep because of unnecessary breeding?

If you do not want to show her, then you need to at least have a Kormeister breed survey done in order to ascertain things like chest depth, chest circumference, gait, firmness of ligaments, height at withers...it gets VERY detailed.

Just wanting one of her pups is a very selfish reason to breed her. Even if the vet says it is fine to breed her doesn't mean it really is. You need to talk to a daschund breeder to find out what are the champion standards for your breed, what specific disorders you need to test for (hip, eye, etc) and what specific qualities in your dog are worth breeding for.

You need to be ready to care for the pups until they are at least two months old, and draw up legal contracts for every person who buys one of your puppies, as well as be ready to take back any number of the puppies as your own.

Breeding is not just about getting a litter of cute little fluffy pups. It is so much more than that. Hundreds of female dogs die or suffer from long-term diseases because they were bred without going through the necessary procedures. Many dogs die during whelping and a C-section, which is often necessary, will run you up well over a thousand dollars. It takes more than a trip to the vet.

Is your dog a champion in the show ring? Has she passed her health clearances and been found free of genetic defects she could pass on to her puppies? Are you committed to caring for all the puppies if homes cannot be found? Do you have the money to afford surgery if there are problems with the pregnancy? Are you prepared for the possibility your dog will die in childbirth? Have you spoken with a professional breeder and spent time learning how to properly breed and care for a pregnant dog? Are you prepared to dispose of stillborn pups? Do you have the money to spay and neuter all the puppies before they go to homes?

Honestly, you are wanting to breed for a very selfish reason. There are hundreds of homeless dachsund pups in the world that would do anything to come home with you. Instead you are leaving them to die while you make more that will also end up on death row in a shelter...just so you can have one puppy? That's really too bad for you and your dog.

Before you are going to look for a stud, think about what's the reason why you want to have her puppies. Are you showing your girl? Can you take care of the litter until they go to their homes (in terms of money, and time)? Do you have good homes for the puppies? Do you have her tested for any genetic problems? I'm not saying breeding is bad, just consider carefully about the consequences of breeding her. It's not an easy job. Also, you realize that no puppies will look exactly like their parents.

** SIGH ** even if you breed her, her pups' chances of coming out to be "just like mom" are slim. You're better off spaying her and getting a doxie from a shelter or rescue. That way you know how the pup's going to turn out. You could lose your momma dog real quickly, and wind up with NO dogs!! there are so many complications, and especially with a small breed! Unless she's a Earth Dog champ, or a champ in the show ring.. she should be spayed as it will add years to her life!

You should either contact YOUR breeder, and talk to her about which male might be best to breed w/ her. Or contact responsible breeders and talk to them. You need to know about your breed. You need to know how to spell your breed. You need to know pedigrees and health testing results and you need to know your dog's faults. You can't just breed to the first person who shows up with a male.. If you are going to breed, it makes no sense to breed a litter if you aren't going to do the best possible.. Why bother.. ?? Why would even do something if they were not planning to do it the right way??

If your dog isn't registered, or you have no idea about your pedigree, or health problems in your breed.. If you don't have the resources to take back dogs if they don't work out in the homes.. Then don't bother.
Odds of you producing a puppy like your current dog is very very low. Especially since you are willy nilly looking for a male without thought and research. You are putting your dog's life in danger, just to produce what you HOPE to be a little copy of your current dog.. It's not gonna happen!

Spay your dog and rescue a 2nd for her to play w/.
You would really love to see her have puppies.. Have you ever seen your dog laying on an operating table .. emergency c-section.. Her belly cut open and her guts spread everywhere while the puppy digs out her HOPEFULLY live puppies?

You really need to do some research before breeding. Please make sure she is clear of any genetic diseases for the breed and you need to wait until she is at least 2 years old. Contact the national dachshund club and talk to breeders and have them evaluate your dog if she is a good specimen for breeding. Otherwise...please have her spayed.

Dont listen to these people. If all people spayed and neutered there dogs there would eventually be no dogs. Plus to get a dog at a rescue/shelter has way to many requirements so some people depend on breeders like you. you can just get another dachsund and breed that one with it. just get a health check and some help from a vet to see if it will go well and your ready to go. i hope you have alot of puppys.
