It depends on who's doing the garnishing. If it's the government doing so because of owed taxes, they will garnish a percentage of your wages and take your tax return until it's paid off.
If it's child support, you can have a judgement against you for a certain amount (the judge usually calculates what you make and what you can pay) and those payments ALONG with a percentage of back payments will be taken.

The collection agency will garnish your wages until the debt is paid off...ONE thing to consider, If you are paying the minimum amount they require....They also tack on interest yearly, so you may be making payments but the interest may be greater than the payments your making, so then you will be paying this debt off forever! heres a few suggestions,
-PAY IN FULL
-GET ANOTHER JOB AND DONT TELL THEM
-PAY MORE THAN THE MINIMUM SO YOU DONT PAY OUT THE A S S ON INTEREST!
