My grandduaughter had the sippee cup introduced to her at about 4mths, she is now nearly eight months old and an expert with the cup. At a family function her other grandmother said to my daughter that using the sippee cup was detrimental to her development and she would get "too ahead of herself". I think she is insane and was wondering what others think of this???
The baby only drinks water from the cup.

If the baby only drinks water from the cup does that mean that she gets her milk/formula from mommy (breastfeeding) or a bottle? If so, as long as the baby knows how to suck and has that need to suckle satisfied I don't see a problem with the sippee cup. My daughter breastfed for 15 months and then I gave her a bottle for regular milk which was my mistake because she didn't want to use a sippee for a very long time. With my next baby, I'll introduce the sippee sooner.

They say to try to get the baby on the sippee cup by atleast a year old...it took months before my daughter would do it. Doing it early is not that bad. If at all the sippee cup is better on the babies teeth than the bottle but it's the sippee cups w/the hard spout not the ones just like the bottle. If your granddaughter is doing fine then I wouldn't worry.

i say that lasy is off her rocker....its a problem when they are on the bottle too ng, nt if they start a sippee cup early. It actually shows that the child has good hand coordination and that she is a fast learner. I wouldnt read too much into it though. If the child is happy than why worry?

I dont think of bleach water is stable.... I knwo what you propose in regards to the sippy cups valves.. they're quite stressful! Get a style of bottle brushes that oyu can take the best area of to scrub valves or bottle nipples that's what i take advantage of. additionally i recently offered my daughter a Nuby sippy cup and it has no valve AND it doesnt leak!!! It has a comfortable spout variety of like the bottle yet formed like a sippy cup. I nonetheless have the dissimilar different sipy cups that Im approximately to interchange them for Nubby sippy bottles!! Im carried out with valves!! LOL

I think its awesome that shes so good with the cup! I also think that it will help with phasing out the bottle altogther (if I understand you correctly, she is still using a bottle for formula or milk? Or breastfeeding?) My son is also "ahead" for his age, and one thing ive found, if hes ready to do something, he'll do it. And if your grandaughter wasnt ready for the cup, she wouldnt be using it!

Yeah, this is ridiculous. What does "getting ahead of herself" really MEAN. She is learning necessary skills and, although advanced, is completely in the normal range. Perhaps this MIL would also prevent her from trying to walk before her first birthday? Strange, but not all that surprising. I find, when talking with my friends who are also moms, that the MIL often tries to compete with them on the basis of parental skill. She'd do best to grin and bear it, but ignore this ridiculous advice.

Some types of sippy cup (the ones with the soft, rubbery spout) can be aassociated with delayed language development. They are fine for a while, but don't use them for too long, altermnate them with straws etc, and introduce regular cups as soon as they are able.

Everyone (especially family) is going to put in their 2 cents when it comes to the baby in the family. Ignore grandma and laugh about it together when she's not around. I once had my step mom's step mom tell me that my 1 month old baby was cold and to wrap her in a blanket because babies need to be in blankets all the time......it was June, in southern california....103 degrees outside......so yeah......laugh it off.

its better to introduce it early! If you don't then its hard to get the bottle away and they don't really know how to drink from the sippy cup. I started my son around 5mos with the sippy cup.
