Yes, I get the feeling from reading the New Testament that Jesus would be far more interested in feeding the hungry and clothing the naked (see the Parable of the Sheep and Goats) than in supporting a priesthood. However, IMHO, real Christianity died in the fourth century AD when Constantine turned it from the religion of the oppressed into the religion of the oppressors...

Possibly because organized religion is a completely corrupt evil enterprise with capitalist ideals as opposed to charitable ideals. That's just a guess, I'm sure they don't care about lining their pockets. One of the pastors in the town I lived in drove a 60,000 dollar 10 mile to the gallon Porsche. Was that really necessary? I drive a 16,000 Dollar car that gets 32 miles to the gallon. So that is about 200 dollars in gas less, and 44,000 dollars less on the car. I wonder how many people that could feed, or how long that could feed one person. Do I help people with the money I save...no, but that is because I only have about 200 bucks after all of my bills. I completely agree with what you are saying though. Perhaps a church collection plate shouldn't be money for the church, maybe it should be for one of the things you listed above, and there shouldn't be a church, there should just be a collection plate. I've gone on too much now though.

If you feed the poor they will make more baby's and then we will have more poor.
If you cant take care of yourself just like a animal the weak dying off makes way for a stronger that creats a better jean pool By us feeding the poor we have already started creating a lot of people who wont do anything to help there self and they think they deserve everything for nothing. One day there will be more people who need something than people that have something to give.
Welfare was the start of this and look how good it worked so far.
If you have nothing go hunting or fishing until you can figure out where your next meal will come from this will fix the hunger problem.
And please don't talk about people in other country's that don't live near food or water they need to walk and find a new place to live .They have plenty of energy to make baby's

Thats unfortunate if that is all that the church you know of gives to is furthering themselves. We need to give at least our 10% to the church becuase its a commandment from God in the bible that we do for him not the church. The offering its a great idea to give it other places if you feel you can fill a need there. I give to my church becuase I know where they will send the money. We have housed people for over a year after hurrican katrina. There is a fully funded rehab ministry for ex cons where it is bacically a transitional period for them. We have a grocery shelf and people go out every saturday and mow lawns, take care of people around the neighborhoods where elders may live that can not do these things on there own. We have christmas for kids and missions all over the world. So not all churches hog it all to themselves just to further there own kingdom and if that is the intent of the heart of a man.. to further himself.. his/her day will come. Thats what I believe anyway

religion and churches are universal. anyone can participate even if there are some that are divided. some people don't know how to live without God or religion. without knowing that there's more to life than pain, poverty, hate, war, ignorance etc...... many of those who come across religion would be miserable and cause others miseries
you can't just throw a good phrase to someone and expect them to believe, that's why 'lots of things' would not be solved simply. from what i've seen and known, religious people tend to be more humble than non religious.

You really have no idea how much social outreach is done by the Christian community. Within Catholic circles its in the millions alone. Protestants combined the same. An insane amount of money and time is put into these programs which are Christian based. Im sure there are secular programs that do wonderful things as well, however you shouldnt be diminishing the obvious help and support given by the Christian community.

Who is "we"? We sounds like waaaayy too many people. People who give are the ones filling the pews tithing not gov't. or your tax dollars. It's funny how people are so quick to judge the church. There ar bad seeds everywhere. There are AMAZING teachers, then there are horrible and unethical ones. Same with doctors, businesses, etc. the ones who don;t do what they are supposed to will have to take that up on judgment day. As for you, keep your money!!
"So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver" (2 Corinthians 9:7

I'm atheist, but I've got to admit, the sectarian sector of our culture has been more effective than any other in social improvement.
Most hospitals, soup kitchens, half-way houses, drug abuse programs, adoption agencies, and special ed. schools are, or started as, faith based. More than one major university had the same origin, and more than one major youth organization would not exist but for faith-based financial support.
Naturally there is waste and misdirection of funds, and funds are not directed democratically or with public oversight, and there are cases of abusers (that should be charged and convicted of crimes), but I seriously don't think most government agencies are truly much better. And results are results. Not even a die-hard atheist can ignore the facts.

The world has its own system so.....
Matthew 22:21 - Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.
17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?
Revelation 2:26 - And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:

Who do you think builds the soup kitchens and feeds the poor. The church I used to attend, in my old community, fed the homeless every Friday night.
