WT 2-15-56 p.110

"Says Johannes Greber in the introduction of The New Testament, copyrighted in 1937: "I myself was a Catholic priest, and until I was forty eight years old had never as much as believed in the possibility of communicating with the world of God's spirits.
Very plainly the spirits in which ex-priest Greber believes, helped him in his translation."

hmmmm

Was Johannes Greber who is credited with the Creation of the New World Translation a Satanist ??

JOHANNES GREBER MEMORIAL FOUNDATION
139 Hillside Ave.
Teaneck, NJ 07666
Gentlemen:
This is to acknowledge receipt of the two books you recently sent to us, The New Testament translated by Johannes Greber, and his book "Communication with the Spirit World of God."
We appreciate you sending these volumes on to us. For some years we have been aware of the translation by Johannes Greber and have on occasion even quoted it. Copies of the translation, though, have been hard to obtain. Since we have four libraries in our headquarters facilities consulted by the members of our staff, including the writers for our journals and books, we wonder about the possibility of obtaining a few additional copies of The New Testament.
Please direct any communication about the above request to the Writing Department, Desk EG.
Sincerely,
Watchtower Bible & Tract Society
of New York, Inc.

No, Jehovah's Witnesses believe that many so-called "ghosts" do not exist at all.

While the details of this "question" seem unverifiable (and in fact conflict with the details of what Greber himself wrote), it is true that Greber and his wife were self-described "spiritualists" who dabbled in the occult. Sadly, many scholars of ancient languages over the centuries have lead unwholesome lives with a wide array of god-dishonoring practices. But few scholars even in the 1930's supposed that ancient Hebrew and Greek language scholarship was anything but a secular exercise which was performed independently of any otherworldly assistance. Even sinners could be expected to come to intellectually honest conclusions.

It was not until the renewed publication of Greber's bible in 1980 that his translation itself authoritatively attributed its own scholarship to spirits. Thus, Jehovah's Witnesses could no longer allow even a seeming tolerance for Greber's bible.

Of course, it is not as though Jehovah's Witnesses had any particular interest in Greber's work. In nearly sixty years, Jehovah's Witness publications quoted Greber five times. His writings were never central to any belief or teaching of Jehovah's Witnesses, and in fact Jehovah's Witnesses had recognized their bible truths decades before Greber produced his translation of the bible (in 1937).

Incidentally, the bible itself teaches that (for some reason) a demon may choose to advocate a bible truth. In other words, Greber's apparent demon influence does not mean that everything Greber wrote was incorrect. Note this account with the apostle Paul and a demon-possessed woman...

(Acts 16:16-17) A certain servant girl with a spirit, a demon of divination, met us. She used to furnish her masters with much gain by practicing the art of prediction. This girl kept following Paul and us and crying out with the words: “These men are slaves of the Most High God, who are publishing to you the way of salvation.”

I say deluded. LOL It is not possible to bring a cat back to life once dead. Either the cat was not dead but unconscious or you were hallucinating. Spirits do exist and demons can and do take on the form of people and animals we are familiar with in an attempt to get close to us and possess us. However, what is with aiming your question specifically at Jehovah's Witnesses? You obviously are not familiar with their doctrine at all. They do not believe that we even have a soul but that the soul is actually our life force and quote a scripture to back this up, I forget where, that says, "The dead are conscious of nothing." They take this scripture literally to mean the whole person, not just the dead body. But the author of that book and all the Hebrews of his faith at the time he wrote it, did actually believe in the soul existing after death. This, scripture, like many throughout the bible, they take out of context, to support their own twisted beliefs. Also, if you are actually doing these things, what you are doing is very dangerous. Most spirits will not talk back to you but demons will. They are only interested in two things. Possession and taking your soul. You must stop everything you are doing in this and return to God alone and ask for his guidance and protection.

*** Multiple Articles ***

? Why, in recent years, has The Watchtower not made use of the translation by the former Catholic priest, Johannes Greber?

This translation was used occasionally in support of renderings of Matthew 27:52, 53 and John 1:1, as given in the New World Translation and other authoritative Bible versions. But as indicated in a foreword to the 1980 edition of The New Testament by Johannes Greber, this translator relied on “God’s Spirit World” to clarify for him how he should translate difficult passages. It is stated: “His wife, a medium of God’s Spiritworld was often instrumental in conveying the correct answers from God’s Messengers to Pastor Greber.” The Watchtower has deemed it improper to make use of a translation that has such a close rapport with spiritism. (Deuteronomy 18:10-12(Deuteronomy 18:10-12) 10 There should not be found in you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, anyone who employs divination, a practicer of magic or anyone who looks for omens or a sorcerer, 11 or one who binds others with a spell or anyone who consults a spirit medium or a professional foreteller of events or anyone who inquires of the dead. 12 For everybody doing these things is something detestable to Jehovah, and on account of these detestable things Jehovah your God is driving them away from before you.. . .) The scholarship that forms the basis for the rendering of the above-cited texts in the New World Translation is sound and for this reason does not depend at all on Greber’s translation for authority. Nothing is lost, therefore, by ceasing to use his New Testament.

*** jv chap. 27 pp. 609-610 Printing and Distributing God’s Own Sacred Word ***

The, the complete New World Translation of The Holy Scriptures, a revised edition in one volume, was published by the Watch Tower Society in 1961. It was made available for distribution for just one dollar (U.S.) so that everyone, regardless of his economic situation, would be able to obtain a copy of God’s Word.

The NWT did not render John1:1 on the basis of Greber’s work.

The first release of the NWT Greek scriptures in 1950 made no mention of Johannes Greber to support their rendering. In the appendix they refer to several Greek Grammas as well as renderings from The Complete Bible, An American Translation (reprint 1943) and the way it rendered John 1:1 – “In the beginning the Word existed, the Word was with God, and the Word was divine”

They also refer to A New Translation of the Bible by Dr. Jas. Moffat where he renders the last clause as “the Logos was divine” (1935 Edition) The later quote a text called The New Testament upon the Improved Basis of Archbishop Newcome’s New Testament: with a Corrected Tex, printed in London, 1808 which reads “The Word was in the beginning, and the Word was with God and the Word was a god”

The reference to Johannes Greber in relation to John 1:1 where his work is used to show that the NWT was not the only one to render it in the way they did

The truth of the matter is the NWT has rendered John 1:1 according to grammatical rules. Bibles that say “and the Word was God” do so on theological ideas.

Interesting to Note: The questioner himself participates in pagan customs. The doctrine of Purgatory is pagan in its origin. The Roman poet Virgil (70 B. C. - 19 B. C.) wrote of purgatory showing the pagans believed in it long before the Catholic Church taught it.

Misleading title? Well, sorta.

The Watchtower was not influenced by him at all. Opposers say thats the reason why we translated John 1:1 the way we did, but thats not true. The Watchtower just quoted his Bible translation of John 1:1 in his Bible, and thats it

Again, Johannes Greber is not credited to translating the New World Translation.

Wondering Faith
Of course they stopped quoting his rendering of John 1:1, but what are you trying to prove? He wasn't the reason why John 1:1 was rendered this way.

Lamb, that's the rub. An admitted spiritualist (Greber) is credited with contributing to the New World Translation, the bible you and your teacher are using to teach you about God.

whatdo you think about that, especially since the Bible is so adamant about anything to do with the spirit world being not of God, but of Satan, and to stay away from it?

Wondering Faith is not lying about this.

Satan can be a deciever and appear like a angel so i understand what you are asking. you have a great point. but one of the 7 gifts of God is dissiferring spirits it can be possible he has that gift. very few people truly do so its is not smart to screw with the underworld because 9 out of 10 times Satan will tell somes truths to get to the lie.

I completly agree with keiichi.

The NWT was not translated by Greber, you are mistaken here. The Watchtower simply quoted from his translation just like they do with many other translations of the bible, they even use examples from the KJV.
