Christ is an English term that comes from the Greek word "Christos", which means "The Anointed One."
Jesus' literal name would have been Yeshua ben Yosef, which means Jesus son of Joseph.

Jesus Christ, where "Christ" is a title derived from the Greek ΧÏιÏÏÏÏ (Christós), meaning the "Anointed One," which corresponds to the Hebrew-derived "Messiah". The name "Jesus" is an Anglicization of the Greek ÎηÏοÏ
Ï (IÄsous), itself a Hellenization of the Hebrew ×××שע (Yehoshua) or Hebrew-Aramaic ×ש××¢ (Yeshua), meaning "YHWH is salvation".

"Christos" (in Greek) literally means oil-covered or anointed. It is the same as the Hebrew "Masiach" which means the same thing (c.f. also the Arabic transliteration "Masih").
In the context of ancient Judaism it could mean one of two things. In its broadest and most general use it could refer to anyone who had a religious anointing, such as a priest (e.g. Lev. 4.3), or a divinely appointed king (e.g. 1 Sam. 12.3, 16.6, 24.7, etc.). More specifically, the term was often used to describe the Davidic king of prophecy (e.g. Daniel 9.25) that was expected to come and deliver and restore the people of Israel.
The Christian faith gets its name from the fact that it consists of those (mostly Jews at first, but later Gentiles as well) who came to believe that Jesus of Nazareth was all of the above and more -- God himself coming as a prophet, a priest, and as the Davidic king, and who through his life, death, and resurrection effected the ultimate deliverance and restoration of Israel.

WHEN the angel Gabriel announced Jesus’ birth to Mary, he said: “Jehovah God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule as king . . . , and there will be no end of his kingdom.” (Luke 1:32, 33) Jesus was called Christ after God anointed him with spirit at his baptism. The title “Christ,” or “Messiah” (al-Masih), means “Anointed One.” (Matthew 3:13-17) From that time onward, he preached “the good news of the kingdom of God.”—Luke 4:43.

christ.....christos...greek, means anointed (Greek) or Messiah (Hebrew).
or to apply annointed to today's world, appointed as annointed in today's language means sanctified by oil. Somehow, just a mere drizzle of oil doesn't sound impressive enough for Jesus The Christ, unless you follow that doctrine.
