garbage men have better benefits than RNs
RNs don't have time to be "social butterflies"
Doctors can be very rude, so can patients
long shifts, heavy lifting, on your feet alot
often required to work weekends and/or "on-call" shifts
a rewarding career, helping others feel better
at the end of the day, fulfilling

I used to work as a hospital, staff RN for 22 years. Is your friend who works 3 days a week and makes enough to support her shopping sprees either married and being supported by her husband or living with her parents for free?
If she isn't, I don't see how someone working only 3 days a week could support herself in an apartment and her shopping sprees by only working 3 days/week.
I found that working in a hospital or nursing home is a back breaking job that is very tiring and draining. You can do it when you're younger, but the older you get the harder it is to deal with.
If you are a social butterfly, when you work as a RN you have to forget that and focus on your job. You need to focus on the needs of your patients and do what you're supposed to do for them.
I have seen nurses try to be social butterflies while they were working. They were terrible nurses! Your patients come into the hospital with big time problems and deserve all of your time and energy.
If you are not willing or able to give them that, then you should go into another career! Nursing is a back breaking and very draining job. If you are not willing to do that for the sake of your patients, you should not be a nurse - you will hate it!
Anyone who goes into nursing just for the money, doesn't deserve to be a nurse and their patients don't deserve having that type of person taking care of them.
At the same time; if you want a job taking care of people, that is interesting, fulfilling, and will give you a real sense of purpose and that you are doing something positive in the world, why not find out more about it.
To get the best idea of whether you would like to become a nurse or not; take a course that will allow you to get a job as a nursing assistant. While you are working as a NA you will see from the inside, what a nurse does and whether you would like it or not.
My best wishes to you.

Nursing could be a good career, but hospitals totally take advantage and will overwork you to death, too many patients, too little time type thing. The doctors can be rude, the patients overly demanding and under-appreciative, it IS back breaking work, and where I live your payed less than someone digging ditches. Consider other areas of healthcare first, such as therapy or something, b/c nursing is NOT what it is made out to be.

Agree with the above. I have been a nurse for 7 yrs. An aide for 5 yrs before that. If yyou are willing to put up with whinny patients, families, dr's and other bs then go for it. I will tell you reg's are more tiresome than the work itself.
