She's had it all day and I will take her to the vet in the morning, but what can I do tonight to stop it? She sounds croupy and she's done this before for a little bit and got over it, but never has she had it like this. Thank you

Unfortunaley there is nothing that you can do at home, except keep her calm and no excersize. Try not to put a collar or leash around her neck for too long as this can cause the dog to cough if there is something wrong. My guess is she either:
1.) has kennel cough - has she been to a kennel, day care, or groomer within the past 2 weeks? It is easily treated with antibiotics, and anti-cough meds from teh vet.
2.) has a heart problem - dogs can cough if their heart becomes enlarged due to a heart murmur, or heart failure. You might want to check a chest xray if the cough does not go away.
3.) Pleural Effusion - The lungs fill up with fluid, and the dog can't breathe. Pants hard, and coughs. Chest xrays are needed, and medication. This is a serious problem, but it doesn't sound like what this it.
Just try to keep her calm tonight, and get to the vet asap in the AM. If it is kennel cough, then it is contaigous to other dogs. I believe in extreme cases humans can get strep throat from a dog with kennel cough, but it is pretty rare. Kennel cough can lead to a secondary bacterial infection which can take a bit longer to go away. I would expect the cough to last for a few days more on antibiotics, but some dogs if they are not vaccinted for kennel cough can have it last weeks. If your pet is vaccinated, they can still get kennel cough, but the symptoms are less severe. Good luck to you!
Another thought - if she has not been to a kennel or day care, all it takes is for one infected dog to cough and your dog be in the vicinty for her to get kennel cough. My dog got it once from being at the pet store, shopping with me. Just a thought.

Do not give her anything, just put aclean bowl with some water in it. My dog also does that, but there are many reasons like something is stuck in the throat, kennel cough ashma symptons, itchy throat, irritation near the throat, worms, allergies, sickness, heart related problams, reaction from medicine recently eaten or shots recently taken, dog food allergy or reactions, ate a houshold object, ate human foods, or some other things.
Hairballs are weird, but my dog has gotten it before. It ate one of its own toys and the stuffing got stuck in the throat, it is really uncomman so i do not think your dog has this.
My dog was because of the asthma. Going to the vet is a great choice. Also let your dog sleep in a big room and a bowl of water next to him or her. Hope all goes well
The person above me says to not give it water, but i haev been through the same thing you have gone through, and water cools your throat, just like when you cough you drink cold water to refresh your throat and soothe it, so does a dog.
I would recommend going to the vet As Soon As Possible, because going tomorrow can be too long of a time, now would be better.
Whatever you do, DO NOT feed her any human foods! No human medicine. Just let her sleep and tomorrow bring her to the vet, make sure her collor is not tight. If the collor is too tight it may result in suffocation, so please take it off or loosen it a lot Also do not listen to some answers below, they say to feed dog butter, but butter is unhealthy for dogs, also they say to feed human medicine, do not do that! Some may be FATAL.

What breed is your dog and how old is it? Sometimes coughing can mean your dog either has a heart condition, or maybe a trachea condition. Flat nosed breeds are more prone to upper respiratory conditions like bronchitis. Your vet may want to take xrays to check the trachea and lungs. Hopefully there is nothing stuck in the throat. There are medications to help with the coughing. take off the collar if your pooch is wearing one. I agree only give him/her some water for now. Keep your dog calm and as relaxed as possible. Good luck tomorrow...

Too many things to tell here without more info
. Is she on heartworm prevention?
The list goes from heartworm to respiratory infection to heart disease to kennel cough to allergies.........and the list goes on.
The vet is just about your only and best bet.
Good luck. Hope it's nothing serious.
Tablets?? What kind of tablets is this guy talking about?
Don't give your dog any kind of meds, but do supply him with fresh water.

She should have been vaccinated for kennel cough. She probably will have to get some medicine at the vet. It may be an allergy. Good thing she is going to the vet.

who cares. White people, remember they are animals. They can take care of themselves. Why do you always think animals need your help? You guys are the ones now calling animals your kids. If you want to take care of someone so bad, go adopt orphans, needy kids of Africa, Brazil and Europe, etc. May be then they can tell why they are coughing. You all are pathetic.

She may have something caught in her throat. Try giving her a piece of buttered bread, maybe that will help. I hope you keep her inside, she may have a respiratory infection.
