My friend has a kennel trained poodle, at least three years old, that has been pooping all over the house recently. She and her husband are both real estate agents and work long hours, but it's been like that for a while now, so she should be used to it. My friend can't think of anything new that would cause her dog to act this upset, though the dog is quite high strung. She gets plenty of chances to go outside and is otherwise well taken care of, but the past month she's obviously been upset about something. Any reccomendations to curb this behavior?

A vet visit is in order to rule out medical problems that may be causing this.

If the dog checks out healthy and the vet then its time to start treating her like a new pup again until she remembers her housetraining.

Of course, it's best to train when a dog is very young, but in this case, it sounds as if your dog is telling you he needs more attention. He sounds bored. He may also have some health problems, like parasites for instance. Get him checked at a reputable vet and definitely use the kennel or even better, a crate. The crate should be just large enough that the dog can turn around and stretch out, but not so large that there's room to get away from a pile of poop. When the dog poops/pees outside, praise and pet and use some term to associate. I tell my dog to "go potty." I don't think the nose in the poop and the whack with the rolled-up newspaper is a good idea. Just clean up and remove the odor with white vinegar. If the dog smells excrement it will think that's the place to go.

Being that your friends are in the sales business, they must work long hours. The dog may be upset that he isn't getting the attention it was used to and is lonely during the day. Perhaps your friend should check into a doggy day care. They will play with your dog, take him out for walks and feed it. Try Petsmart or Petco.

Thats just ridiculous. Poodles dont poop because they are upset. They poop because they can and will keep doing it until she puts a cork in the dogs butt or re trains it to stop pooping everywhere.
She needs to crate the dog and re train. The little pooper forgot what she is supposed to be doing. She needs to take her out before work, come home at lunch and let her out and then let her out in the evening. Praise her for a job well done and give her a liver snack when she poops outside.

Our dog started doing this and we found out he had worms. Have your friend take the dog to the Vet.
