Hi Sue, you should also be limiting sugar. But, if you aren't limiting sugar a great snack is a strawberry milkshake. You can make it with a banana, strawberries and ice cream or Yogurt, which ever makes you feel better about it. My kids love this, it's their favorite snack.
You can add some cod liver oil in there to give them their essential fatty acids, which really help kids that suffer attention deficit.
Basically though, natural foods can be treats. I always make up a plate of fresh fruits, make it look very pretty and the kids love it. For many a fresh strawberry is a treat, or pineapple and the bonus is they are both very good for them.
Remember, presentation is everything!

Unless you have a garden and a dairy, then food without additives will be hard to find.
Try peanuts or peanut butter crackers and water.
And face facts...kids are going to be hyper and out of control sometimes. They're kids, and we don't want to break their spirit.
Altering behavior is a slow process but it can be done. Reducing processed sugars in the diet is a good idea, along with direct supervision and redirecting energies to more positive and productive endeavors.

Concentrate on proteins and natural foods. The proteins give lasting energy and stablize the hyperness. Celery with peanut butter and raisins - although regular PB has sugar and raisins are natural suger. Rice cakes, yogurt, carrots...anything that is "natural" will probably rev him up. If you "ease" into the boring food with the peanut butter and raisins (ants on a log) and make it fun, he may go for it. Rice cakes with a cheese smiley face... Try www.familyfun.com

I make oatbran/oatmeal cookies, reduce the sugar called for when adding chocolate chips. What makes a better snack than a homemade oatmeal cookie?
Go here and see what you can find.
