Cairns (Far North Queensland) and Brisbane (South East Queensland) are both viable options to land at, and then get a connecting domestic flight to the Whitsundays (land at Hamilton Island or Proserpine on the mainland).
Dpending where you are coming from will be the deciding factor, I guess. Brisbane handles far more destinations than Cairns (although not as much as Sydney). However, Cairns handles flights from Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore among others..so does Brisbane, but also from New Zealand, the Pacific, the Middle East and USA.
The Whitsundays are truly beautiful...please enjoy them!
